Hints for Transferring Files (All)

This is a portion of an article that originally appeared in the ClarisWorks Journal, the monthly publication of the ClarisWorks Users Group, Box 701010, Plymouth, MI 48170; (313) 454-1969; Fax: (313) 454-1965. Copyright ClarisWorks Users Group; reprinted with permission.

As you know, the Claris XTND technology lets you transfer data between ClarisWorks and dozens of other applications. The list of translators is extensive, but not comprehensive. For example, Claris does not offer translators for PageMaker, Publish It!, or newly released programs such as Word 5.x and Microsoft Works 3.0.

The trick is to use a file format that you can read and write with both ClarisWorks and the other application. For example, Microsoft Works 3.0 can read and write Works 2.0 files. You can save your ClarisWorks and Works 3.0 documents in Works 2.0 format and transfer the Works 2.0 format file between applications.

Microsoft Word 5.x and ClarisWorks can both read and write Word 4.0 files. That lets you use Word 4.0 format files to transfer documents between Word 5.x and ClarisWorks.

Most programs can read and write Text files, but Text files do not contain any information about the fonts and format of your document. Thus, you should use a common application format (such as Word 4.0) or RTF (Rich Text Format) file whenever possible to preserve the format of your original document.

CWUG members who do extensive work requiring file transfers should contact DataViz, manufacturers of MacLinkPlus, a file transfer utility for the Macintosh. MacLinkPlus includes dozens of XTND translators that work with ClarisWorks, MacWrite II, and other Claris products that support the Claris XTND technology.
