Kerning adjusts the space between pairs of letters to enhance the aesthetic quality and readability of your documents. You use kerning in body text to smooth the visual flow between letters ? usually by decreasing the space between the characters. This is called "negative kerning". In headlines, "positive kerning" adds space between letters to produce an attractive effect.

Unlike dedicated page layout programs and some high-end word processors, ClarisWorks and ClarisImpact do not offer a kerning command. But you can achieve positive kerning by adding small spaces between characters in your headlines. Follow these steps to kern your headlines:

1. Type the headline.

2. Place the I-beam cursor between the letters that need kerning.

3. Go to the Size Menu and select a small size font. For sizes smaller than 9 points, use the "Other" option to enter sizes as small as 4 points.

4. Press the Space Bar to insert a space.

5. If the size of the space is not satisfactory, press the Left Arrow, and double-click. This selects the space; then return to step 3.
