How to Paste Graphics in Your Word Processor Documents (GR,WP)

This is a portion of an article that originally appeared in the ClarisWorks Journal, the monthly publication of the ClarisWorks Users Group, Box 701010, Plymouth, MI 48170; (313) 454-1969; Fax: (313) 454-1965. ©ClarisWorks Users Group; reprinted with permission.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

There are four ways to add graphics to a ClarisWorks word processing document:

1. You can use thegraphics tools to create the graphic within the word processor document.

2. You can copy and paste the graphic from other ClarisWorks documents or from other applications.

3. You can use the Insert Command in the File Menu to insert a graphic stored in a file on a disk.

4. You can add a spreadsheet frame to your document and create a chart or graph from your spreadsheet data.

Whether you should create the graphic within the word processor document or in a separate document depends on your application. Graphics that you create within a document retain their position on the page and do not move with the text. You must manually drag and reposition the graphic each time you edit your text. Thus, you should create graphics within the document if you want to control their placement on the page.

Graphics that you paste or insert in a document move with the text. You should paste or insert graphics that you want to "flow" with the text.

How to Paste a Graphic

This tutorial describes how to copy and paste a graphic from another document (or another application) into a ClarisWorks document.

First, you will need to create a graphic; follow these steps:

1. Create a new graphics document. Then use the drawing tools to create a multi-object graphic; the quality of the graphic is not important.

2. Choose "Select All" from the Edit Menu (or press Command-A) to select all the elements in the graphic. Then choose "Group" from the Arrange Menu (or press Command-G) to group the graphic elements into a single object.

3. Choose "Copy" from the Edit Menu (or press Command-C) to copy the graphic to the clipboard.

Now you will paste the graphic into the middle of the first column of a two-column word processing document. Continue as follows:

4. Open the word processing document and scroll until the middle of the first column is visible on your screen.

5. Choose "Rulers" from the Format Menu, click on "Graphics", and click on "OK". This switches from the text ruler to the graphics rulers. The graphics rulers will make it easier to place the graphic precisely on the page.

6. Click where you want to paste the graphic (see Figure 1). Then press the Return Key to add a blank line. Click to put the insertion point at the beginning of the blank line.

7. Select "Paste" from the Edit Menu (or press Command-V) to paste the image from the clipboard into the document. The graphic will appear at the insertion point on the page.
