Updater Generates an Error

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Claris updaters combine your original software with a list of changes and create a new, completely up-to-date application. For this to work correctly, you need to have a previous version that it can update. There are several reasons why an updater might generate an error message.

Incorrect Version
For instance, the ClarisWorks 2.1v2 updater can update version 2.0v1, but not 1.0, since there was a major upgrade between 1.0 and 2.0 which costs $99 and includes a new set of manuals and disks.

Non-U.S. Version
Updaters only work with standard U.S. Macintosh versions. Trying to update an International or site-licensed version will result in an error message.

Application was modified
The updater is very particular about what it will and won't update. The application has to be unmodified, so if you used ResEdit or any other utility to change any resources, you won't be able to use the Updater on that copy. Application corruption can also cause error messages. In both cases, simply install the application from your original diskettes and run the updater on the unmodified application.

Bad Download
When downloading an updater, there is no guarantee that it will download cleanly. Phone noise and other anomalies can cause faulty transmissions. How can you tell if corruption was introduced during downloading? Click once on the Installer and choose Get Info from the File menu. If either of the memory settings is set to zero, then the download was unsuccessful and you will need to try downloading it again. The same applies to the Updater itself. If you click on it once, choose Get Info, and see memory settings set to zero, then that copy may be corrupted as well. This type of corruption can often result in a -50 error message.

If the Updater Doesn't Work for You
If you think your version meets all the requirements above and the updater is unsuccessful:
1. Re-install the application from your original diskettes,.
2. Restart your Macintosh and hold down the shift key until you see the message "Extensions Off". If you have System 6, follow the instructions for disabling INITs in the System Crashes & Bugs document in this folder.

3. Run the updater on the fresh application you just installed.
4. If the update is still unsuccessful, and you got a system error as opposed to a "resource is different" error, try increasing the amount of memory allocated to the updater. Click on the updater icon once to select it and choose Get Info from the File menu. Increase the preferred size by 200K if you have enough memory on your Macintosh to accommodate that.
5. Download another copy

If the update is still unsuccessful, call Apple Technical Support.

Below are some of the known Updater error messages which can occur:

ALRT 400
The ClarisWorks 2.1v4 updater does not update the Power Mac version of ClarisWorks 2.1v3.

BNDL 128 resource is different
Some ClarisWorks owners modify the ClarisWorks file icons with ResEdit to show the environment a file was created in. This generates a BNDL 128 error. Re-install a fresh copy of the ClarisWorks application using original disks, and run the updater on that copy.

BOBO resource is different
This is caused by running the ClarisWorks 2.1v2 Mac U.S. updater on a Canadian version.

CODE 1 resource is different
FileMaker Pro customers should be directed to simply replace the FileMaker Network file with the one in the updater folder. They do not need to run the 2.1v2 updater because they already ran a previous release. Only the FileMaker Network file was changed in the re-release, to fix a Power Macintosh bug.

CODE 17 resource is different
Restart your Macintosh and hold down the Shift key until you see the message "Extensions off." The n run the updater. This error has been reported by Performa owners updating ClarisWorks 2.0 and seems to be related to a standard Performa extension.

Curs 25001 Resource is different.
This message is due to a program that has made changes to the cursor. (Application was modified). Simply install the application from your original diskettes and run the updater on the unmodified application

DITL #129 resource is different
Claris Corporation modifies DITL #129 for site licensed software. As a result, some updaters are not compatible with site licensed software. In addition, a reseller version of ClarisWorks 2.1 was built for ComputerWare with a special splash screen which contains a legal agreement that specifies that the software should only be used internally.

DITL #130 resource is different
The ClarisWorks 1.0v4 Updater generates a DITL 130 error and aborts updating when used on a copy of ClarisWorks which came pre-installed on a Performa. Currently, this is only a known problem with ClarisWorks 1.0v3 Performa. The 1.0v4 update is only necessary for ClarisWorks owners who need to open ClarisWorks for Windows files. Customers who receive the DITL 130 error and need to open Windows files should be shipped a free 1.0v3 - Program replacement disk. They will be able to install and update that copy of the ClarisWorks application.

Error -21 or Error -22
You may receive this error when attempting to update on a Power Macintosh. Increase the application memory by highlighting the updater application icon, then go to the File menu and select Get Info. Increase the the memory to 3000K in the preferred memory box. Then try updating again. In general, applications not written specifically for the PowerMacs require more memory to run properly under emulation.

Error -37
Attempting to save the updated application to the same location as the application being updated and changing the default saved file name to the same name as the old application will generate a -37 error message after Okaying the dialog asking to replace the file. After quitting the Updater, the original, unchanged application can be found in the trash. Simply saving the updated application using the default file name, "New <application name>", avoids the problem. (Fixed in UpdateMaker 2.1)

Error -50
Most likely a corruption introduced during downloading. Follow the troubleshooting steps above and if they donÕt work, try downloading it again.

SIZE 1 resource is different."
The Claris Organizer 1.0v2 updater generates the message: "Could not update 'Claris Organizer' because it is not the file that this update is designed for - the SIZE 1 resource is different." This message indicates that the memory allocation for Claris Organizer has been adjusted . The updater will work properly if you change the memory settings back to their original settings: The Minimum Size "800" and Preferred Size"1200". Once you have changed the memory allocation back the original size then run the Claris Organizer 1.0v2 Updater.

Other Notes
LaserPro copy protection modifies the application and prevents updaters from working properly.
