Pasting Finder Icons

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
The Macintosh Finder in System 7 allows you to copy the icon which is attached to any file by opening the Get Info screen for the file, clicking on the icon and choosing Copy from the Edit menu. You can then paste the icon into any Claris application.

The information that is copied, however, is a little bit more than the simple icon picture. Every Macintosh icon has a "mask" attached, which gives the icon its distinctive highlighted appearance whenever the icon is selected.

All Claris graphics applications treat the pasted icon as a grouped pair of icons. However, they treat the mask differently. MacDraw II and MacDraw Pro both show the mask as an object which is entirely black. MacDraw II also loses any icon color.

ClarisWorks 1.0, ClarisWorks 2.0 and ClarisImpact all display the mask as a white transparent object after ungrouping.
