ATI Graphics Ultra+/Pro Mach32 Video Driver Information

How to troubleshoot possible conflicts with ATI's mach32 video drivers.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

The following information was provided by ATI Technical Support to help troubleshoot possible video driver conflicts with Windows products.

Memory Problems
-----------------
ATI technical support recommends excluding the range A000-C7FF from your memory manager. If you are using DOS's memory manager, the emm386 line in the config.sys would read as follows:

C:\\DOS\\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-C7FF

Also, edit the SYSTEM.INI file and include the following line in the [386Enh] section:

EMMExclude=A000-C7FF

Current Drivers
-----------------
As of September 1993, the latest mach32 (pronounced "mock 32") video driver for the ATI Graphics Ultra+ and ATI Graphics Ultra Pro boards is version 2.1. The FlexDesk control panel will tell you what resolution you are running, how many colors you can show, and what version of the driver you have. To update the video driver, download the following files from ATI's BBS: LOADER.ZIP and M32WXX.ZIP, where XX is the current version of the driver. The updater will ask you if you want to uninstall the existing drivers; you should answer yes.

The files are available from Library #17 of the ATI forum on CompuServe or by calling the ATI Download Bulletin Board.

For troubleshooting purposes, you can use Microsoft's VGA (640x480) or 8514/a (1024x768) drivers instead of ATI's drivers.

ATIKEY.EXE is a utility that ships with the mach32 drivers and allows you to switch resolutions on the fly. This utility may be added to the load= line in the win.ini. If you suspect that ATIKEY might be causing problems, simply remove it from the load= line and then restart Windows.

Quick Time For Windows Problems
-----------------

FileMaker Pro ships with the option to install Quick Time for Windows. To see if Quick Time is installed, Select About FileMaker Pro from the Help menu, then select Info.

To use Quick Time for Windows with the ATI mach32 video driver version 2.3 in Windows, set DeviceBitmap=OFF in the [mach] section of the WIN.INI file.
