Creating a Title or Blank Lines in an Outline

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Although the outline mode is a very convenient way to organize information, sometimes you may wish to type text which is not a part of the outline structure.

For example, Legal format begins every topic with a number. You might want to title your outline so that the Label is omitted from the first line, but that would also omit the first outline number. You might also want descriptive notes or extra text under an outline item, but you don't want that text to have outline characters.

However, if you create a text frame, the outline can be pushed below the title using text wrap.

In ClarisWorks:
1) Create your outline using the Outline View option in the Outline menu.
2) To add a title, hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click and drag a rectangular area within your margins at the top of your document. Note that your cursor must be an i-beam, so start your title area to the right of the first topic label. (Be sure to drag an area all the way across the width of the area between the margins. If you do not, the topic label will be to the left of the title, and the first topic will begin to the right of, instead of below, the title.)
3) When you release the mouse, a box will appear over your outline, and the cursor will be blinking within the box. Type in your title, and format the text as desired.
4) Press the Enter key to select the text frame, then select Text Wrap... from the Options menu. Choose regular text wrap, and the outline should move down below the title.

In ClarisImpact:
1) Open a new report.
2) Select To Outline from the Text menu.
3) Create your outline.
4) To add a title, first select the text tool. Then hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click and drag a rectangular area within your margins at the top of your document. Note that your cursor must be an cross-hair, so start your title area inside of the margins. (Be sure to drag an area all the way across the width of the area between the margins. If you do not, the topic label will be to the left of the title, and the first topic will begin to the right of, instead of below, the title.)
5) When you release the mouse, a box will appear over your outline, and the cursor will be blinking within the box. Type in your title, and format the text as desired. Note that text wrap was already selected for the new text object you created, so the Outline was automatically pushed down.
