SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- February 28, 1994 -- Claris Corporation today announced that it has ceased development of the Claris Resolve spreadsheet application and will not sell it after March 31, 1994. Claris will continue to provide technical support for registered Resolve users for one year (through March 31, 1995).

To assist Claris Resolve owners who may want to move to another spreadsheet in the months ahead, Claris is offering these users ClarisWorks 2.1, the #1 best-selling integrated application on Macintosh, for a special price of $29 in the U.S. through September 30, 1994. The suggested retail price for ClarisWorks 2.1 is $299.

In addition to its spreadsheet functionality, the "document-centric" approach of ClarisWorks combines full-featured word processing, database, painting, drawing, outlining, communications and presentations capabilities in a single compact application. Many Claris Resolve users in education, home and business settings who do not require custom spreadsheet applications and scripting may find its breadth of solutions a compelling choice.

"Despite its usability breakthroughs, superior performance and minimal hardware footprint, Claris Resolve was unable to garner the necessary market acceptance to be a sustainable long-term competitor in the Macintosh spreadsheet market," said Steve Pollock, vice president of worldwide product marketing. "While clearly a difficult decision, this move enables Claris to focus on delivering award-winning cross-platform products in important categories, and evolving key Macintosh applications. It is our hope that by extending the ClarisWorks special offer as one possible transition path and by continuing technical support for an additional year, Claris can show its appreciation for the past support of Claris Resolve owners."

Claris Background

By consistently focusing on products for generalist users, a fast-growing segment of the total software market, Claris has grown to one of the 10 largest personal computer applications software vendors worldwide. Claris recently reported that net revenues for the first quarter of FY1994 were $44.9 million, representing 16 percent growth over the $38.8 million posted the same quarter in 1993.

Claris growth rate continues to outpace the software industry average. The company's FY1993 revenues were $154.4 million, a 48 percent increase over FY1992.

The continuing success of FileMaker Pro and ClarisWorks on both Windows and Macintosh platforms accounted for much of first-quarter growth, Claris said. Those products are best-sellers in the Macintosh database and integrated software categories, respectively.

Claris launched 1994 with the shipment of MacWrite Pro 1.5, the popular Macintosh word processor, and ClarisImpact on Macintosh, the first of a new family of cross-platform graphics products. This year Claris will also introduce new software for Apple's Macintosh with PowerPC microprocessor, and continue to break new ground in combining power and usability with Windows and Macintosh applications.
