Here are two methods for placing spreadsheet data into your ClarisImpact table or chart model. If you have information in a ClarisWorks or Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that you want to use in a ClarisImpact report, you can import the spreadsheet data into either a table or chart model by saving the spreadsheet as a SYLK or by copying and pasting the cells into a ClarisImpact table/chart.
These are the steps for placing a SYLK file into a ClarisImpact table:
1. In your spreadsheet file, save your file as a SYLK file type.
2. Launch ClarisImpact, and create a new drawing, presentation or report document.
3. Choose the Table or Chart tool, specify model style and number of rows and columns, then click OK.
4. Click in the first cell, choose Place File. In the dialog box, change All Available to SYLK.
5. Choose your SYLK file and click Place. The SYLK format captures the formulas used in your spreadsheet, while Copy and Paste do not. It's important to choose the SYLK translator in the Place File dialog box. If All Available is chosen, "garbage characters" may be placed in the table/chart.
NOTE: Before you create the SYLK file, make a note of how many rows and columns are used in your spreadsheet. When you create the table or chart in ClarisImpact, specify the same number of rows and columns as your spreadsheet. If you haven't specified enough rows or columns, only part of your data will be placed into ClarisImpact. The first figure (Figure 1) is a table specifying two rows and four columns, and was resized after placement. Figure 2 was created with eight columns and four rows. If you haven't allotted enough cells in the Table to allow room for a formula, you may get a message "Formula which could not be understood has been replaced with a value." Add more cells and replace the file.

Copying And Pasting
You can also use Copy and Paste to place your spreadsheet data into ClarisImpact. If you want to use a section of your spreadsheet, you can copy the selected cells and paste them into a table or chart cells. Unlike the SYLK import, ClarisImpact adds rows and columns to accommodate your data. Copy and Paste brings over the numbers that result from a formula, but not the formulas. This is true for pasting Microsoft Excel or ClarisWorks spreadsheets.
