Smart Quotes not Printing

Here is a quick way to get Smart Quotes to print without turning off extensions.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

If Smart Quotes do not print there are three possible reasons: an extension conflict, that the font you are using is corrupt or that the font that you are using does not support the smart quote characters.

When you are troubleshooting this kind of issue, you can approach each of the possibilities separately:

If you are using Macintosh System 7, restart your Macintosh with the Shift key held down. This allows you to restart the machine and turn off all extensions. If the issue goes away, then you know that the issue is caused by an extension conflict. If you need to use Smart Quotes, you will need to troubleshoot the extension conflict. Call Claris Technical Support.

If you do not want to spend time determining which extension is causing the issue, try turning Smart Quotes off in Preferences. Any quotation marks that you type with Smart Quotes turned off will show up as straight quotes, not "curly" quotes. Also, while in Preferences (in ClarisWorks, ClarisImpact and ClarisDraw), click on the Make Default button so that all new documents use regular quotes. In all other programs, use a Stationery document to save regular quotes as a default.

If the issue does not go away when you restart your machine with Extensions off, it is likely that you have a corrupt font or a font that does not support Smart Quotes. Try switching to another standard Macintosh font like Times or Helvetica, to see if your Smart Quotes print properly.

If switching to another font allows the Smart Quotes to print, then you know that the original font is either damaged or does not support Smart Quotes. To check for damage, remove and reinstall the font and see if that fixes the issue. To see whether or not that font supports Smart Quotes, contact the font manufacturer.
