Transferring Elements/Symbols Between Computers

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
If you have made changes to some of your styles, and you wish to use those styles on more than one computer, you should copy your style files to the other computer so they can be used there.

Model elements and symbols are stored in folders inside the ClarisImpact folder called ClarisImpact Color Styles and/or ClarisImpact B&W Styles. These folders contain the style files for each type of model.

Note: In the following scenarios, the word 'symbols' refers to both Symbols and Elements.

Scenario 1: You have created/altered some symbols and you want to install them on a computer where the default symbols have not been changed or added to.

Solution: Copy either the appropriate symbol file (such as Timeline styles) from the style folder on your machine to the style folder on the other machine, replacing the style file. If you want to update the entire folder, you can copy the entire folder.

Scenario 2: You want to have two different sets of styles (the ones that Mary made and the ones that Mark made) on one machine.

Solution: Keep the symbols in different folders with different names. When you want to use a different folder, go to Preferences, under the Layout menu. Click on the Models icon. Now change the name in the ClarisImpact style folder box to the name of the folder you wish to use. Note: it is important that you have the style folder in the same folder as the application itself.

Scenario 3: You wish to add symbols that you have created to the symbol set on another computer. Perhaps someone else has edited their symbols, but wish to add some of yours to their symbols.

Solution: Make a model on a document that uses all of the symbols that you wish to copy. Open that document on the other computer. You can add symbols or elements by hitting the Add button on the symbols floater for each model. You may have to click the down triangle on the floater to see the Add button.
