Tray Selection And The HP 4 Printer Driver

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
The Hewlett-Packard printer driver HPPCL5E, which supports the Laserjet 4, 4M, 4SI, and 4SI MX printers, doesnÕt save paper tray selections between Windows sessions. If you change the paper source in the printers control panel, the setting is set in Windows programs, however, once you exit and re-enter Windows the HP 4 printer driver will revert to the default Auto Select option for the paper tray. You can work around this problem by editing your WIN.INI file. Use a text editor such as Windows' Notepad to open the WIN.INI text file and then locate a section called:

[HPÊLaserJet 4/4M] or [HP LaserJet 4SI/4SI MX]

You must then manually change the tray selection to one of the selections shown below:

1 MPÊTray 5 Envelope Feeder
2 Paper Cassette 7 Auto Select
4 Manual Feed 11 Lower Cassette

For example, the HP 4 section in the WIN.INI that has these lines:

[HP LaserJet 4/4M, LPT1]
paper=1
prtcaps=-5240
prtcps2=4561
tray=1

This example sets the paper tray selection to be the MP Tray every time Windows starts. The HP 4 printer driver default for the tray= line is

tray=7

which is Auto Select.
