When using ClarisWorks for Windows, you may sometimes receive the error message: "Unable to quit at this time. Please close all dialogs before quitting Windows." You may get this message even though there are no dialogs open. This can occur when trying to close a floating palette or a document, or when trying to exit out of ClarisWorks.
This is the result of an incompatibility between ClarisWorks and certain video drivers. It has been confirmed in the case of certain SpeedStarPRO video drivers.
Though this issue may be intermittent, the only way to consistently avoid it is to use another video driver. The most stable video driver is the VGA driver that ships with Microsoft Windows.
To change your video driver:
1. Open the Main group in Program Manager
2. Double-click on the Windows Setup icon
3. Choose Change System Settings from the Options menu
4. Click on the down arrow to the right of your current Display listing, scroll down the list of drivers and select VGA.*
5. Click the OK button
6. If the driver is already on your hard drive (which is usually the case), you will see a dialog saying: "A driver for this display is already on the system. Do you want to use the currently installed driver or install a new driver? When you see this message, click the Current button. If the driver is not already on your hard drive, you will be prompted to install it from your Windows diskettes.
7. Once you have chosen the VGA driver, you will see a dialog saying: "You need to restart Windows so that the changes you made will take effect. Do not press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart Windows -- This will result in data loss. Restart Windows now?" When you see this message, click the Restart Windows button.
*If the VGA driver proves unacceptable, try using another driver within the driver family you were originally using, but select one that is either lower resolution and/or supports fewer colors than your original driver.
