Q. I miss the AppleWorks database option that lets me select fields that are blank or not blank. Is there some way to do this in ClarisWorks?

A. You can use the Match Command to select records with blank or non-blank fields. The following example demonstrates how to search for records with a blank entry in the PHONE field:

1. Go to the Organize Menu and select "Match Records" (or press Command-M).

2. Scroll down the Function Window to display the ISBLANK function and click on that function. Then double-click on the word "value" displayed in the Formula Window, and click on PHONE in the Fields Window.

Alternatively, you can type the formula ISBLANK('PHONE') into the Formula Window.

3. Click on "OK" to select all the records with blank PHONE fields.

4. Choose "Hide Unselected" from the Organize Menu to display the selected records.

To find all non-blank records, just follow steps 1-3 above, and choose "Hide Selected" from the Organize Menu.
