Cursor is Displayed Ahead of Inserted Text (All)

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Cases have been seen where the cursor is ahead of the text being typed. So far, this has only been seen with the Helvetica font in system 7.1 and 7.5.

Symptom: You are typing in a document, and your cursor is several spaces ahead of you. This can be seen anywhere the font is used.

Here are some options to fix the problem:

* Open the Fonts folder, which is inside the System Folder. Drag the problem font suitcase out of the System Folder. Then open that font suitcase and place its contents back in the Fonts folder. This will leave the individual fonts loose in the Fonts folder. In most cases, that fixes the problem. Quit your applications, then open a document again to test the results.

* If the first option does not work, first verify you have an original, undamaged copy of the problem font on floppy disk. Move the individual problem fonts out of your Fonts folder, and into the trash. Empty the trash to delete them. Then drag the good copy of the problem font suitcase from original floppy disks to the Fonts folder.

*Turning on the Fractional Character Width preference can reduce or eliminate the problem, but may not solve it.
