ClarisWorks: About Version 2.1v2 Macintosh, Read Me

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Welcome to ClarisWorks 2.1!

Thank you for choosing ClarisWorks 2.1. We're excited about this new release of ClarisWorks and we hope you will enjoy using it. This document provides some late-breaking information that couldn't be included in the printed manual.

Please read this file carefully. It contains several important tips that may give you better results or make it easier for you to use ClarisWorks. You may even wish to print this document for use after you have installed ClarisWorks.

PERFORMANCE TIP
* Adjusting ClarisWorks Memory
As with any Macintosh program, you will gain greater flexibility and performance if you increase your application memory size. This is especially true if you work in the Paint environment, work with larger documents, or work with a number of documents during the same session. Similarly, if it takes a long time to print documents, increasing the memory size may help. For more information on increasing memory size, consult the ClarisWorks Installation and New Features Guide, under adjusting memory.

NEW FEATURES AND CHANGES IN VERSION 2.1

ClarisWorks version 2.1 has a number of powerful new features, and enhancements to several existing features. The Installation and New Features Guide describes the most important changes. Additional information is outlined below.

* Balloon help is now available for the buttons in the shortcuts palette. If you are unsure of which command a button performs, choose Show Balloons from the Help menu to display the name of the button.

* The Make Custom Style shortcut now appends style information to the font and size in the Style menu.

* If you import a PICT file into a paint frame or document, ClarisWorks now matches the imported file's resolution. It will also use the color table of the original picture.

* If you set the default fill pattern to be transparent, ClarisWorks now displays the Transparent icon in the pattern indicator of the tool panel.

* New file filters have been added to ClarisWorks 2.1. A ClarisWorks 1.0 text filter has been included to simplify translation of ClarisWorks 2.0 or 2.1 files to ClarisWorks 1.0. A new filter provides support for reading and writing Excel 4.0 files.

* ClarisWorks 2.0 and 2.1 files are identical. Version 2.0 can open version 2.1 files automatically and vice versa. ClarisWorks 1.0 files can be opened in version 2.1. You will be notified when ClarisWorks 1.0 files are opened in version 2.1 and, to ensure that your ClarisWorks 1.0 files are not saved over unintentionally, a suffix "[v2.1]" will be appended to the file name. If you want to replace your ClarisWorks 1.0 files with ClarisWorks 2.x versions, you may do so easily. Simply perform a Save or Save As, remove the "[v2.1]" when defining the file name, and click "Yes" when asked if you want to "Replace existing" file.
* Discretionary hyphens included in documents created in version 2.1 will appear as box characters when the file is opened using 2.0.

SOME TIME SAVING FEATURES
* "ABOUT Stationery"
This file contains information about using and creating Stationery files with ClarisWorks 2.1. Stationery files are templates that can save you time when you create a new document such as a memo or letter. To access the "ABOUT Stationery" file, select New... from the File menu, click on the pop-up list to the right of the Stationery label, select "ABOUT Stationery", and click OK.

* "ABOUT Sample Files"
This file describes the Sample Files that are included with ClarisWorks 2.1. Some of the sample files were specifically created to be used as is-just enter your own information. Other sample files demonstrate the wide range of possibilities ClarisWorks provides. "ABOUT Sample Files" is in the Sample Files folder within the ClarisWorks 2.1 folder.

* "More About Shortcuts"
Shortcuts are timesavers that give you pushbutton access to over 150 of the most frequently performed day to day tasks. You can personalize your Shortcuts palette to include those commands that you find useful. For a complete list of the Shortcuts and brief descriptions of what they do, open "More about Shortcuts." You will find it in the Sample Files folder within the ClarisWorks 2.1 folder.

PRINTING TIP
* LaserWriter IIg/IIf Owners
If you notice that horizontal or vertical lines in your documents are not being printed correctly, you will need to make a simple adjustment to your LaserWriter's settings. To do this you will need the LaserWriter tools disk that came with your printer. Just follow these three steps:

1. Open the LaserWriter Utility application on the LaserWriter disk.
2. Under the Utilities Menu, choose Set PhotoGrade.
3. Move the slider all the way to the left towards the "More Levels of Gray" option.
Your printer has now been reconfigured with the proper settings.

COMMUNICATIONS NOTES
* Claris Kermit Tool
ClarisWorks 2.0 includes a Kermit file transfer tool for Apple's Communications Toolbox. It is automatically installed into the Extensions folder under System 7 or into the Communications Folder under System 6. This tool behaves in much the same way as the XMODEM file transfer tool. If you use System 7, you can turn on Balloon Help under the Help menu to get additional information.

* VT320 Keys
This sample document contains Shortcuts that are the equivalent of function keys found on VT220 and VT320 terminals. When you open the document you will see information on using these Shortcuts.
