About Version 3.0 Windows, Read Me

This file ships with ClarisWorks and provides important information on some new features and on issues to be aware of when using ClarisWorks.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

Welcome to ClarisWorks 3.0 !

Thank you for choosing ClarisWorks 3.0. We're excited about this latest release of ClarisWorks and know that it will help you to be more productive and creative. This Read Me file documents some tips that may prove helpful when using ClarisWorks 3.0, as well as some late-breaking information. You can print this document for future reference.

Assistants
ClarisWorks now includes seven Assistants you can use in working with documents for your home, school, or office. Assistants ask you questions and then produce a document or part of a document based on your answers. Assistants also guide you on the content of your document.

Some Assistants create complete documents such as newsletters, presentations, name and address lists, envelopes, or calendars. To use an Assistant, choose New from the File menu and then click the Start With An Assistant Or Stationery button.

Some Assistants (for making a table, typing a footnote, or addressing an envelope) are available only when you are working within a specific type of document (e.g. word processing or drawing). To see what task Assistants are available to you in your current document, choose ClarisWorks Assistants from the Help menu.

Editing Documents Created with the ClarisWorks Assistants
Some documents created using the ClarisWorks Assistants (or provided as Stationery files) contain objects that are locked or grouped to keep objects in position and prevent accidental edits. To move or edit the objects, unlock and/or ungroup them:

1. Select the object while in Draw mode. Click the Arrow tool first if necessary.

2. Choose Unlock (or Ungroup) from the Arrange menu. If an object is both locked and grouped, first unlock it and then ungroup it.

To edit the text in an object, click the Text tool and then click on the text you want to edit.

Cross-platform compatibility
ClarisWorks 3.0 for Windows has the same file format and features as ClarisWorks 3.0 for Macintosh. If you work with both Windows and Macintosh versions of ClarisWorks, or if you collaborate with colleagues who use ClarisWorks 3.0 for Macintosh, you can work without translating files or learning a different program.

ClarisWorks 3.0 for Windows opens and saves files that are fully compatible with ClarisWorks for Macintosh versions 3.0, 2.1, or 2.0, so you can use existing Macintosh 2.x files and/or share work with colleagues using version 2.x. Consequently, you can create a ClarisWorks document on Windows and edit it on a Macintosh computer or vice versa.

Due to differences between Windows and Macintosh platforms, it is necessary to use a file transfer program such as PC Exchange, AccessPC, or a similar utility in order to transfer via floppy disk. These utilities require that your Macintosh have a high density drive (FDHD SuperDrive). Follow the directions in the documentation of the file transfer utility program. After copying the files to a PC formatted disk, rename the files with DOS-compatible file names (8 characters or less) and include the .CWK extension.

After renaming your files, copy them to your PC's hard drive, if desired, and open them as you would any ClarisWorks for WindowsÊdocument.

Fonts, margins, page breaks, and graphics may appear differently after being transferred from the Macintosh. You can minimize font substitution problems by using TrueType fonts on both platforms. It may be necessary to change the margins and page breaks in order to restore the original page breaks. QuickTime movies will be converted to PICT images. In addition, some macros created on the Macintosh may not run as expected on Windows. In these cases, it is necessary to recreate your macros.

Opening ClarisWorks 1.0 files
When you use ClarisWorks 3.0 to open ClarisWorks 1.0 files, ClarisWorks displays a message and adds [v3.0] to the file name. To replace your ClarisWorks 1.0 files with ClarisWorks 3.0 versions, choose Save or Save As from the File menu, click OK, then click Yes when ClarisWorks asks if you want to replace the existing file. If you do not want to save over the ClarisWorks 1.0 file, rename the file.

Importing EPSF Images
When you import or insert an EPSF (Encapsulated Postscript File) image into a ClarisWorks document, it is converted to a bitmap.

Changing your Communications Document Default
If you frequently use another communications package other then Microsoft Windows Terminal, ClarisWorks can launch the program automatically. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu and click General (on the left) to display preferences for this category. Click the Change To... button under TERMINAL.EXE and select your communications software program (an .exe file).

General Troubleshooting
The following suggestions are offered as potential solutions to the stated condition. You may want to try any or all of them.

Installing
If the installer fails, make sure that the Virtual memory is turned on and set to the Windows suggested size (see Performance below). In addition, use Custom Install to install only the files that you need. If you are not using any other Claris products, remove any existing files in the Claris directory and any CLARIS.INI file (both usually in the Windows Directory) that exists from a previous version.

Some virus checking software may interfere with the installer and prevent a complete installation. If this occurs, turn off any virus checking software before starting the installer. Turn it back on after installation is successful.

Out of Memory Error Messages
If you encounter an error message which says there is no enough memory to perform an operation, try the following:
- adjust your Virtual Memory (see Performance below)
- check the DOS CONFIG.SYS and remove any unnecessary drivers and TSRs to free up more memory in DOS
- closing other applications and ClarisWorks documents that may be running in the background

Note: On computers with 4Mb of memory you may encounter out of memory messages when using gradients, creating paint documents, or using 256 color settings.

Performance
32-bit applications such as ClarisWorks require Virtual Memory to be turned on. In order to increase the performance on computers with 8Mb of memory or less, we recommend the following:
- Setting the Virtual Memory to Permanent
- Using the suggested size for your virtual-memory setting (usually twice the size of physical memory)
- Enabling 32-bit disk access

To make these changes to your system:
1. In the Program Manager, open the Main Group, double click on Control Panel, then double-click the 386 Enhanced icon.

2. Click the Virtual Memory button, then click the Change button.

3. Select Permanent from the Type pop-up menu.

4. Click the check box next to "Use 32-Bit Disk Access"

5. Accept the above settings and the suggested size by clicking OK.

If your suggested size is less than twice your physical memory, you may need to increase your free disk space by removing unwanted files or defragmenting the hard disk (DOS 6.0 users can use DEFRAG.EXE; DOS 5.0 users may use some other utility). Defragmenting
your hard drive may also increase the performance of your computer.

We also recommend that you run SMARTDRV.EXE by adding the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\\DOS\\SMARTDRV.EXE. Use the SMARTDRV.EXE version 5.0 that ships with DOS 6.0 for better performance.

Opening non-ClarisWorks files
If you are unable to open or insert files created by programs for which we provide a file translator, ensure that the file filters (files with the .x32 extension) are installed. Use Custom Install to install the filters.

Printing
If you have trouble printing, try installing an updated printer driver (may be obtained from your printer manufacturer or Microsoft Corporation). For instructions on installing a driver and configuring your printer, see the Chapter on "Control Panel" in the Microsoft Windows User's Guide.

If text is getting clipped on the right margin or if graphic objects print with thin lines across them (specifically on inkjet printers such as the Canon BubbleJet BJ600C), turn off Banded Printing. To do this, choose Preferences from the Edit menu, click General, and then click Banded Printing.

If you are using a Hewlett-Packard 560c deskjet printer, we recommend using version 4.2 of the printer driver, available from Hewlett Packard or Microsoft Corporation.

Printing Patterns
ClarisWorks supplies a palette of patterns that you can apply to graphic objects. Because these patterns are 72 dots per inch, high resolution printers do not print patterns as they appear on the screen. You might want to select patterns that are less dense than others.

Video Cards and Drivers
If you have problems with your screen displaying objects correctly, you may have a problem with your video driver. If this is the case, try changing the resolution to 640x480 or 800x600. Or, try changing the number of colors displayed (for example, 256, 16K, millions of colors). To verify that it is a video driver problem, change the video driver to Windows standard VGA and run ClarisWorks. If the problem goes away, contact the video card manufacturer for the latest version of the driver or use the driver that is included with the Windows Installation disks.

To change your video driver settings, either follow the directions for your video driver setup or use Windows Setup as follows:

1. Go to the Program Manager and open the Main Group

2. Double click on Windows Setup and make a note of the current Windows Display setting

3. Choose Change System Settings from the Options menu

4. Click in the Display box and select the appropriate setting from the scrolling list and use the current driver if prompted

If you have don't have an accelerated video card and are experiencing slow screen redraws, we recommend that you turn Offscreen Drawing on. To do this: choose Preferences from the Edit menu, click General and click Offscreen Drawing (the checkbox is checked). However, if, after making this change, the screen does not redraw properly when you move objects, turn the Offscreen Drawing option off.

Custom Color Palettes
When using certain video drivers, you may encounter display problems with documents using Custom Color Palettes. We recommend using the default Windows color palette. If you have a document that uses custom colors, turn Offscreen Drawing on (see above). We also recommend closing all the floating color and gradient palettes as well as any ClarisWorks documents running in the background.

Fonts
If your fonts do not display or scale correctly (for example clipping or overlapping), try the following:

- Make certain a valid printer driver is selected as the default and that is it NOT the Generic/Text Only driver
- Enable TrueType (see Adobe Type Manager below)
- Make certain the standard Windows fonts, such as Arial, are installed properly

To select or change the default printer:
1. Go to the Program Manager and open the Main Group

2. Double click on Control Panel, then double-click the Printers icon

3. Select a printer from the Installed Printers list and click Set As Default Printer button

4. If you do not have any printers installer, refer to your Microsoft Windows User's Guide for instructions on installing printers

To delete or reinstall standard Windows fonts consult your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.

Adobe Type Manager
If you have Adobe Type Manager installed on your computer, make sure that "Banded Printing" is checked in Preferences (see Printing above). Also ensure that TrueType fonts are enabled on your system. To do this:

1. Go to the Program Manager and open the Main Group
2. Double click on Control Panel, then double-click the Fonts icon
3. Click the TrueType button, then click Enable TrueType Fonts
