"Cannot Write to Hyphenation Dictionary" Error

Something to be aware of if you use international dictionaries with MacWrite Pro 1.5v3 or ClarisWorks 3.0 on a Power Macintosh

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

Issue: When attempting to use a non-U.S. dictionary in ClarisWorks 3.0 or MacWrite Pro 1.X, the following error message comes up:

"Cannot write to hyphenation dictionary, file is an unknown version or is damaged."

In fact, the issue is not related to hyphenation files.

This issue is specific to the Power Macintosh computers (PPC) and applies to English applications (U.S. and U.K.) using non-English dictionaries.

Solution: Trash the Claris Spelling Enabler (The Claris Spelling Enabler provides faster spell checking for English dictionaries on Power Macintosh computers. It's a Power Mac native version of the spell checking engine normally found in the individual dictionaries.) To remove the Claris Spelling Enabler, open the Claris folder within your System Folder and drag the file named "Claris Spelling Enabler" to the Trash.
