This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
A complete installation of ClarisWorks 3.0 requires about 11 megabytes of free space. This includes the application, Assistants, the Introduction to ClarisWorks, on screen help, stationery files, clip art, spell-checking, thesaurus, hyphenation, import and export translators, and communications tools. If you don't have enough space, you'll need to remove some files from your hard disk in order to create enough space.
4. Are you upgrading from a previous version of ClarisWorks?
If you are upgrading from a previous version of ClarisWorks, skip to Part Two.
5. Are you on a network?
Contact your network administrator to see if you have the proper hardware and System software.
6. Which System software version do you have?
A. Go to the first item listed under your Apple menu. It should say, "About this Macintosh" or "About the Finder." (See Figure 3.)
B. Choose that item. You'll then see a window which says "System Software" followed by a number. (See Figure 4.) This number is the version of the System software your Macintosh is using. ClarisWorks needs System 6.05 or greater.
C. If you have System 7.0 or 7.0.1, we recommend that you install System 7 tune-up, version 1.1.1. System 7 tune-up is available from Apple Computer, Inc. If you see "7.0¥" or "7.0.1¥" the Tune-up has already been installed.
D. If you have System software that is earlier than 6.0.5, you'll need to install a more recent version. System software is available from Apple Computer, Inc. or many authorized Apple dealers.
7. How much memory (RAM) do you have installed?
Go back to the first item listed under your Apple menu, as shown in the graphic above. Look at the number next to, " Largest Unused Block." This is the amount of memory available above and beyond what the System requires.
If you have a version of System 6 (6.0.5 through 6.0.8), you'll need at least 1 megabyte of total memory (1 megabyte is equal to 1,024 bytes.). If the largest unused block says that you have less than 800k of memory available, you can increase the amount available to ClarisWorks by turning off MultiFinder. Go to the Special menu and choose Set Startup. If MultiFinder is selected, click Finder only and restart your computer before installing ClarisWorks.
If you have any version of System 7, you'll need at least 2 megabytes (2,048 bytes) of total memory and at least 800k in the largest unused block of memory.
If you have less than the recommended memory, you'll need to have more installed or your System software reconfigured. Contact your local authorized Apple service dealer to add memory to your machine. If you're not sure how to reconfigure your System folder (removing excess fonts, etc., check with your service dealer, as well.
8. Register your software.
Please take time to complete and mail the postage paid product registration card, or call (800) 325-2747 to register by phone. For information about customer support, refer to the Claris Support Portfolio Service Directory included in the product package.
9. Make back up copies of your disks.
Lock your ClarisWorks disks by sliding the locking tab on each disk so that the hole is open. Then make copies of these disks before installation. Make sure that you name the disk copies with the same names as the originals. The Installer won't recognize the disks if they have different names. After making the backup copies, store the originals in a safe place. Lock the copies and use them for installation.
10. Turn off virus protection.
If you have virus protection software on your Macintosh, turn it off before installing. You can turn it back on after you're done installing. Check your virus protection software's documentation for instructions.
PART TWO: INSTALLING CLARISWORKS
Easy (complete) installation is recommended. This will install the entire ClarisWorks package.
1. Insert Disk 1 into the floppy (3.5 inch) disk drive on your computer.
The icon for the disk will appear on your screen. (See Figure 5.) Double-click on the disk icon to see the contents of the disk.
2. In the window for Disk 1, double click on the "Install ClarisWorks" icon. (See Figure 6.)
3. In a few seconds, you'll see the ClarisWorks Installer welcome screen. (See Figure 7.) Click on the OK button.
4. You'll then see the Install ClarisWorks window. (See Figure 8.)
This window has buttons on it which allow you to do a number of things. It will default to Easy Install, and the hard disk which has your System folder on it. This means that it will do a complete installation on your main hard disk unless you tell it to do something else.
If these settings are not what you want, you can click the Easy Install button and do a custom installation, installing only what you want. If you want the Installer to install ClarisWorks on another hard drive, click the Switch Disk button. If you want the Installer to install ClarisWorks in a particular folder, click on the pop-up menu.
When the settings are ok, click on the Install button. The Installer will tell you what it's doing and will ask you for each disk it needs.
5. After all the files are installed, the Installer will tell you that the Installation was successful.
6. Click on Restart. The ClarisWorks application is now on your hard disk in the ClarisWorks 3.0 Folder.
7. Double click on the icon for ClarisWorks 3.0 (it's in the ClarisWorks 3.0 folder).
When you launch it the first time, you should enter your name, the name of your company and your serial number from your registration card.
8. You can now safely remove the old version of the application, ClarisWorks 1 or 2.
Drag the icon for the old application into the Trash and empty it. Now, whenever you double click on a file, ClarisWorks 3.0 will open it. If you get a message which says that you don't have enough access privileges to throw away the old version, you have Applications folder protection on. Go to Control Panels under the Apple menu. If you're on a Performa, you may have to turn off this option in the Performa control panel. On other Macs, it's turned off in the General Controls control panel. (See Figure 9.)
9. If you are using the Launcher, there's one more additional step.
Open up the ClarisWorks 3.0 folder and click once on the icon for the application ClarisWorks 3.0 to highlight it (If you click twice, ClarisWorks will launch). Go under the File menu and choose Make Alias. You'll then see a file named ClarisWorks 3.0 alias. Place this alias file in your Launcher items folder in your System folder. If there's an alias file for an earlier version of ClarisWorks in the Launcher Items folder, trash it. Now, ClarisWorks 3.0 will appear in the Launcher. (See Figure 10.)
