ClarisWorks: Controlling Startup Options

How to control the Welcome Screen and Startup Options.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

When starting up ClarisWorks 3.0 for the first time, you will see a "Welcome Screen" which offers you three choices:

- Show me an on screen tour of ClarisWorks
- Create a new document
- Open an existing document

There is also a checkbox at the bottom of the screen which offers you the option to bypass the Welcome screen in the future, and go directly to creating new documents at startup.

On a Windows computer
If you have checked the box to suppress the Welcome screen and decide later that you would like to restore it, you can do this by deleting the CLWORKS.PRF file.

1. Save any open ClarisWorks files and exit the application.

2. Use the Windows FileManager or DOS to locate the CLARIS directory. If you used the default settings when installing ClarisWorks (or if ClarisWorks came pre-installed on your computer), the CLARIS directory will be located inside your Windows directory.

3. Delete the CLWORKS.PRF file located within the CLARIS directory. [NOTE: This will undo any changes you have made to the default application preferences.]

4. Restart ClarisWorks to see the Welcome screen.

On a Macintosh computer
ClarisWorks 3.0 for Macintosh has several startup options. To restore the Welcome screen, or to choose whether to have ClarisWorks create new documents, open existing documents, or do nothing at startup:

1. Choose Preferences under the Edit menu.

2. Select the General category on the left side of the dialog box.

3. Under the options for "On startup, show" (in the lower-right corner) choose the desired option.

4. Click on the Make Default button and then on the OK button.

5. Quit and restart ClarisWorks to see the new startup setting.
