Disk Error Messages During Installation

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
An alert may appear during installation that says "A disk error occurred while reading from the disk. Please contact technical support for help. IO Error (Bad Disk)" . Here's what you can do to try to fix the issue, before ordering replacement disks.

1. Fixing a damaged Desktop file
The desktop file on the floppy disk may be damaged or unreadable. To rebuild the desktop, first drag the floppy disk icon to the trash, so that it's icon is not visible on the computer screen. Hold down the option and command keys and insert the disk. You'll see an alert that says "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop." Release the keys on the keyboard and click OK.
Repeat this for the remaining installation disks. Then try installing again.

2. Try copying the floppy disk to the hard drive. (Drag the floppy disk icon onto the hard drive icon). The contents of the floppy will be copied to a new folder, with the same name as the floppy. Then copy the contents of this folder to a new disk (open the folder and drag the contents; don't drag the folder itself). Rename the new disk to the same name as the folder. Then reinstall using the new disk in place of the bad one.

3. Try running Norton Disk Doctor on the floppy disk to repair it.

4. If the disk is unreadable or you can't copy it to the hard drive, try step #2 above on a different computer. The disk may be readable on another computer.

5. Try a custom installation to install just the application, instead of an Easy Install. (In the installer window, click on Easy Install and select Custom Install). If that works, try a Custom Install of another item, such as the Help files. Try installing each item, one at a time, from the Custom Install window.
