Localized Updaters

Update your localized version of Claris software with the correct version of the updater.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

Localized updaters work only for applications in the same language. Practically speaking, this means you cannot update a French product with a German updater.

How an updater works
An updater works for specific versions of an application. You will want to consult the chart (see Figure 1) to see what versions apply to you. The update is a two-step process. In the first step, you update the application. In second step, you update the file translators. Once your update is complete, you can throw out the older version of the application. However, before running an updater, be sure you have addressed the following issues:

Virus detection software
The updater makes several changes to the application. Many virus utilities may prevent these changes and therefore prevent a successful update of your software. To avoid this inconvenience, disable all virus detection software and restart your Macintosh before running the update. The easiest way to do this is to restart your Macintosh with the Shift key held down, holding it down until the "Extensions Off" message appears in the Welcome to Macintosh dialog box.

Hard disk space
For this installation to be successful, be sure that you have enough free disk space on your hard drive. It is recommended that you have ten megabytes free for every 100 megabytes on your hard disk. Many updaters may take up to a full megabyte of space on your hard drive.

How to update an application
Here are the steps for running an updater:

1. Double click on the icon for the Updater application.
2. Click OK.
3. The Updater will attempt to find your copy of the application that you want to update. If the Updater fails to find it, you will be prompted to locate and select your current version of that application.
4. Click Update.
5. You will then get a status bar showing that the application is being updated. When it has finished, you will see a dialog that indicates a successful update has been performed. Click OK to continue.
6. From the desktop, go to the folder that contains the application. You will find your original program and the new version, which will be labeled with the newer version of the application.

7. To ensure that the updater worked correctly, double-click on the application just installed. If successful, quit the application and return to the Finder.
8. If your original application was not automatically deleted for you, place your original application in the Trash and choose Empty Trash from the Special menu in the Finder.

How to update the translators
As part of a regular update, you will also need to update your existing Claris application Translators file. To replace this file, follow these steps:
1. Open the System Folder on your hard disk.
2. Locate and Open the Claris folder.
3. Copy the new application Translators file from the updater diskette into the Claris folder; respond OK when asked whether to Replace the existing file. Note: be sure not to copy this file into the Claris Translators folder. If you do, the import/export capability will not work. The standard installation of the Claris application places the Claris application Translators file in the Claris folder. If you have done a custom installation, this file will either be in the System Folder or in the same folder as the application. If this is the case, locate the file and replace as directed.

A note on FileMaker Pro European Updaters
There is a corrected version of the Read Me file for the FileMaker Pro Updater 2.1v3. A change was made to point #7 in the Read Me file, which now reads as follows: If you are sharing databases on an AppleTalk network, copy the FileMaker Network file included with the Updater into the Claris folder. The Claris folder should be located inside your System Folder.

If you are sharing databases between PCs and Macintosh computers on a Novell network, copy the FileMaker Network file included with the Updater (in the MacIPX Updater folder) into the Claris folder. If you are asked to replace a file with the same name, do so. The MacIPX control panel should be put into the Control Panels folder inside the System Folder. The other MacIPX files (MacIPX Token Ring, MacIPX AppleTalk and MacIPX Ethernet) should be put into the Extensions folder inside the System Folder.
