How to Reassociate a Data File / Document File in Windows 95

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
When using Windows 95, if double clicking on a data file / document file in either MY COMPUTER or WINDOWS EXPLORER opens up the document in the wrong or an undesired application, it is likely that the association is incorrect.

To reassociate a data file / document file to another application, follow these steps.

1. Double click on MY COMPUTER
2. Select OPTIONS from the VIEW menu.
3. Click on the FILE TYPES tab.
4. Choose the document type that you wish to reassociate from the REGISTERED FILE TYPES list.
5. Click on the EDIT button
6. In the ACTIONS list, click on the OPEN option
7. Click on the EDIT button
8. In the APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION field, type in the modified path to the application you wish to use.

NOTE: The BROWSE button can be used navigate through your folder / directory structure to find the desired application.

9. Click the OK button
10. Click CLOSE to close the EDIT FILE TYPE window.
11. Click CLOSE to close the OPTIONS window

Double clicking on the file in either MY COMPUTER or WINDOWS EXPLORER will now open it up in the newly associated application.

This might be helpful for people who have several versions of an application installed on their machine but want certain file types to be opened up with certain versions or want to redirect certain files (i.e. text files) from their default association to another application.
