ClarisWorks utilizes a file known as the "XTND Translator List" to keep track of which file translators are available to it for opening and saving files in foreign file formats.
Occasionally, it is necessary to delete and rebuild this file. ClarisWorks will automatically rebuild this file during startup if it senses that it is not present. On Power Macintosh machines, a problem can occur which will cause ClarisWorks to crash while attempting to do this. This can happen if the machine has an alias to anything (a file, folder, or volume) that is not located on a local hard drive (e.g. a server alias) if the alias is located in the Claris folder or the Extensions folder (both of which are located within the System folder), or in any sub folder within either of these two folders.
The solution is to move such aliases to another location on the hard drive (or to the desktop) before starting up ClarisWorks. After ClarisWorks has successfully started and rebuilt the XTND Translator List, the aliases can be moved back to their original location, if desired.
