Win32s is a sub-system created by Microsoft for the Windows 3.x and Windows for Workgroups 3.x operating systems. The Win32s libraries allow Windows 3.x and Windows for Workgroups 3.x users to run 32-bit applications in a 16-bit environment.
Since its inception, Win32s has been updated several times. Depending on the Claris application, or other Win32s based application you are using, it might be important to know about and use a particular version of Win32s. All Claris applications come with the required version for that application. However, if other applications also install their own version of Win32s it is very easy to not know what version of Win32s is installed on your system and if it is compatible with your Claris application.
To confirm the version of Win32s that is installed on your system, one of two methods may be used.
1. CHECK THE VERSION IN THE WIN32S.INI FILE.
The WIN32S.INI located in your \\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM subdirectory. It is a small configuration file that you can view with any text editor. Additionally, if Windows is configured to view INI files, you can double click on the WIN32S.INI file in the File Manager. It will bring up information similar to the following:
[Win32s]
Setup=1
Version=1.30.166.0
[Nls]
AnsiCP=1252
[Freecell]
Setup=1
Version=1.30.166.0
[OLE]
Setup=1
Version=2.3.130.166
In the above example, the version of Win32s is 1.30.166
2. CHECK THE PROPERTIES OF THE WIN32S16.DLL
The WIN32S16.DLL file is located in the \\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM directory. It is a library file used by Win32s. The version of Win32s can be checked by checking the Properties of this file in the File Manager. Locate the WIN32S16.DLL file and click on it one time to highlight it. With the file highlighted, select PROPERTIES from the FILE menu of the FILE MANAGER to view the version.
