When spell checking a document in ClarisWorks 3.x for Windows or ClarisWorks 4.0v1 for Windows 95, it is possible to receive the following error message:
INTERNAL SPELLING ERROR SPL01
This error is caused by a problem with the way ClarisWorks is configured to use the USER dictionary that is installed on your machine. Please consult the troubleshooting tips listed below depending on the version of ClarisWorks that you are using. The steps below do require an intermediate comfort level with Windows, if you are uncomfortable with making the changes suggested below, please consult a technician. To verify which version of ClarisWorks you are using open Claris Works and go to the Help menu and choose About ClarisWorks.
CLARISWORKS 3.x
Most likely this error is being caused by a corrupted USER dictionary. To confirm this the USER dictionary should be deleted and recreated. Any new words that you had ClarisWorks "learn" during previous spell checks will be lost. By default, the ClarisWorks 3.x USER dictionary is called USER.USP and is located in your CLARIS directory. This file, or it's equivalent should be deleted or renamed before recreating the new file.
To recreate the USER dictionary file follow these steps.
1. Choose WRITING TOOLS from the EDIT MENU
2. Choose SELECT DICTIONARIES
3. In the SELECT DICTIONARIES dialog box, choose USER DICTIONARY from the SELECT DICTIONARY drop down list
4. In the FILE NAME box, type in a new name for your dictionary (i.e, USER) and click on the NEW button.
5. Close ClarisWorks
The next time you restart ClarisWorks, it will activate the new USER dictionary
CLARISWORKS 4.x
Most likely this error is being caused by ClarisWorks being configured to use an invalid USER dictionary. In this case all that needs to be done is to configure ClarisWorks to use the proper USER dictionary.
To switch what USER dictionary is being used in ClarisWorks 4.x follow these steps:
1. Choose WRITING TOOLS from the EDIT MENU
2. Choose SELECT DICTIONARIES
3. In the SELECT DICTIONARIES dialog box, choose USER DICTIONARY from the FILES OF TYPE drop down list
4. Confirm that the CURRENTLY SELECTED DICTIONARY is not already configured to a valid USER dictionary. A valid USER dictionary should have a USP file extension. If this appears to be configured correctly, then your USER dictionary could be corrupt and needs to be replaced.
5. Navigate through your directory / folder structure until you locate the USER.USP file and double click on it.
6. Close ClarisWorks
When you restart ClarisWorks, it will activate the new USER dictionary.
If you find it necessary to recreate your USER dictionary, follow these steps
1. Delete your old USER dictionary (the file with the *.USP extension)
2. Choose WRITING TOOLS from the EDIT MENU
3. Choose SELECT DICTIONARIES
4. In the SELECT DICTIONARIES dialog box, choose USER DICTIONARY from the FILES OF TYPE drop down list
4. In the FILE NAME box, type in a new name for your dictionary (i.e, USER) and click on the NEW button.
5. Close ClarisWorks
When you restart ClarisWorks, it will activate the new USER dictionary.
