WELCOME TO CLARIS EMAILER
Thank you for choosing Claris Emailer.(TM) This Read Me file documents some additional tips that may prove helpful when using Claris Emailer, including a description of changes for users of previous versions of the program.
In particular, this document provides information about:
1. Terminology used for Internet account setup
2. New features in Claris Emailer 1.1
3. New features in Claris Emailer 1.0v3 and 1.0v2
4. Where to go for more information and help
5. Changes and fixes
1. TERMINOLOGY USED FOR INTERNET ACCOUNT SETUP
The terminology used to set up Internet accounts has been changed since the printing of the manual. The new terminology is now the same as that used by the Internet Configuration System (Internet Config). Internet Config is a tool available from online services that allows applications that are Internet aware to share a common setup.
Old term New term
POP account Email account
POP password Email password
SMTP server SMTP host
Return address Email address
Please see pages 1-4 and 6-12 of the Claris Emailer User's Guide for more information on setting up an Internet account.
2. NEW FEATURES IN CLARIS EMAILER 1.1
In addition to numerous smaller enhancements, Claris Emailer 1.1 has nine new features added since 1.0v3.
- Support for Claris OfficeMail
- Drag and Drop Text Files into Messages
- Messages Deleted in the Filing Cabinet are Moved to Deleted Mail
- Local Preferences
- Specify Recipient Type in Find Address
- Enhanced Support for Addresses
- Choose a Sound for New Mail
- Folders can be sent as Enclosures
Support for Claris OfficeMail
Claris Emailer connects to Claris OfficeMail. Claris OfficeMail is a LAN email solution for work groups and small businesses. It includes support for a gateway connection to the Internet.
Drag and Drop Text Files into Messages
You can drag a text file from the Finder into the body of a message. This is similar to capabilities available with desktop clippings.
Messages Deleted in the Filing Cabinet are Moved to Deleted Mail
Items that are deleted from folders in the Filing Cabinet are now moved into the Deleted Mail folder, not deleted from disk. Of course, if the message is already in the Deleted Mail folder, then the message is deleted.
Local Preferences
You can now keep the Claris Emailer Preferences file in the same folder as Claris Emailer. This can be useful if you keep Claris Emailer on a removable disk. You can also use a local preferences file to run more than one copy of Claris Emailer simultaneously on a single machine.
To use a local preferences file, copy the Claris Emailer Preferences file from the Claris folder in the System Folder into the Claris Emailer Folder. A local preferences file is always used instead of a preferences file in the Claris folder. When you use a local preferences file, the title of the Claris Emailer Browser window changes to reflect the name of the copy of the Claris Emailer that you are running.
Specify Recipient Type in Find Address
The Find Address dialog now allows the user to select what type of recipient the selected addresses should be (To, CC, or BCC). The recipient type defaults to the type of the current row in the addressing window.
Enhanced Support for Addresses
Claris Emailer allows you to drag the text of an email address to a number of places including the recipient list and the address book. Claris Emailer now recognizes the following forms of text drags:
sally_jones@host.com
Sally Jones, sally_jones@host.com
"Sally Jones" <sally_jones@host.com>
Sally Jones <sally_jones@host.com>
"Sally Jones" sally_jones@host.com
sally_jones@host.com (Sally Jones)
<sally_jones@host.com> (Sally Jones)
Claris Emailer has always supported command-clicking a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) if Internet Config is installed. There is now support for command-clicking on an email address even if Internet Config is not installed. To command-click an address with a name, select the entire name and address, then, while holding down the command key, click on the highlighted text.
Choose a Sound for New Mail
You can now choose a sound to be played when you receive new mail. Use the Play Sound pop-up menu in the Preferences to choose the sound. Note that you can also specify a sound to be used for each Claris OfficeMail account if Claris Emailer is not running.
Folders can be sent as Enclosures
Folders can be sent as enclosures by dragging a folder to the enclosures area of an outgoing message. Note that you cannot add a folder by using the Find Enclosure or Add Enclosure buttons.
3. NEW FEATURES IN CLARIS EMAILER 1.0v2 AND 1.0v3
Claris Emailer 1.0v2 and 1.0v3 had eight new features added since 1.0.
- Save As Text
- Execute an AppleScript Document for a Schedule
- Native Open Transport
- Connect Again
- More Information During a Connection
- Internet Config Settings Display
- Default Encoding Setting for Internet Enclosures
These features are incorporated into Claris Emailer 1.1.
Save As Text
You can save any message that you are viewing as a text file. The text file can be opened by a text editor, word processor, and many other applications.
To save a message as a text file, follow these steps:
1. Open the message. The message can be in the In Box, Out Box, or in the Filing Cabinet.
2. From the File menu, select the "Save As Text" menu item. A save file dialog box is displayed.
3. Enter a name for the document and click the Save button.
In addition to the Save As Text feature, Claris Emailer installs an XTND translator for saved Claris Emailer messages. The XTND translator allows applications like ClarisWorks to directly open messages saved in the Filing Cabinet.
Execute an AppleScript Document for a Schedule
Claris Emailer allows you to execute an AppleScript document as part of a schedule. The AppleScript document can instruct Claris Emailer to connect to one or more accounts or services.
To install an AppleScript document:
1. Locate the AppleScripts folder inside the "Claris Emailer Files" folder.
2. Copy the AppleScript document into the folder.
To select an AppleScript document to execute at scheduled times:
1. From the Setup menu, select the Schedules menu item. The list of schedules is displayed.
2. Click the Add button to create a new schedule or select an existing schedule and click the Open button to edit an existing schedule. The schedule dialog box is displayed.
3. In the upper left side of the dialog box, select AppleScript from the Execute pop-up menu. A new pop-up menu listing the available AppleScripts is displayed below the Execute pop-up menu.
4. Choose the AppleScript to execute from the AppleScript pop-up menu.
Two example AppleScripts are included. They are located in the folder "Scripting Claris Emailer" which is in the "Support Files" folder.
* All Services - This example simply connects to each service.
* Internet via MacPPP - The AppleScript opens a TCP connection via MacPPP, connects to your default Internet account, and then closes the MacPPP connection. This AppleScript is also installed in the AppleScript folder and is available to your schedules. Note that you must have the "MacPPP Control" AppleScript addition installed.
Here is one location on the Internet for MacPPPControl:
http://www.claris.com/support/products/emailer/docs/freeppp.html
Note: AppleScript is provided with System 7 Pro and System 7.5. If you're using System 7.0 and 7.1, AppleScript is available from Apple Computer Inc.
Native Open Transport
Open Transport is a new networking technology from Apple Computer that provides enhanced networking. When Open Transport TCP is installed, Claris Emailer uses Open Transport for Internet connections. This can improve performance when compared to MacTCP.
Connect Again
The Connect Again feature immediately connects using the previous Connect Now settings. This is quicker than Connect Now since the Connect Now dialog box is not displayed.
The Connect Now menu item is the last menu item in the Mail menu. It uses command-option-K as a keyboard equivalent.
More Information During a Connection
The Connection Status window displays more information about the current connection. This information includes:
- The subject of the current message.
- An estimate of the current data throughput.
- Notice if there was no mail waiting.
Internet Config Settings Display
When the checkbox "Use Internet Config" is selected in the Internet account setup, the Internet Config information is displayed in the account fields. The settings cannot be edited since they come from Internet Config.
Default Encoding Settings for Internet Enclosures
You can now set a default encoding to use when sending an enclosure via the Internet. Click the Options button in the Internet account setup to change the setting.
4. WHERE TO GO FOR MORE INFORMATION AND HELP

* Example AppleScripts - This folder contains AppleScripts that demonstrate how to use AppleScript to control Claris Emailer.
For the latest information, visit the Claris Emailer Home Page at:
http://www.claris.com/support/products/ClarisEmailer/index.html
* There is a mailing list dedicated to Claris Emailer. Mailing lists provide a place for people with similar interests to communicate with each other. The Claris Emailer mailing list is called Emailer-Talk.
To subscribe to the Emailer-Talk mailing list, send an email message to:
emailer-talk-request@eskimo.com
In the subject enter:
subscribe
Because of the volume of mail that you might receive via the mailing list, you may want to set up a Mail Action to manage the mail. A possible Mail Action would be the following which would move the Emailer-Talk messages into the Filing Cabinet.
If any recipient contains "emailer-talk"
File message in "Emailer-Talk Folder"
Note: The Emailer-Talk mailing list is run by an independent organization and is not in any way associated with Claris or Apple Computer.
5. CHANGES AND FIXES
Following are the changes and fixes that were made in 1.0v2, 1.0v3, 1.1v1, 1.1v2 and 1.1v3.
Changes and Fixes in 1.1v3
* Made changes to run properly under Open Transport (OT) 1.1.1.
* Fixed problem where encoded subjects in outgoing Internet mail could show up in an error log.
Changes and Fixes in 1.1v2
* The "connect to" AppleScript command now waits until a connection is done.
Changes and Fixes in 1.1v1
* The eWorld service has been removed.
* The enriched text information in Internet messages (text styles) is stripped leaving only the text of the message.
* Opening new messages is generally faster.
* SimpleText or TeachText read only files can be dragged into the message body.
* When importing address books, the number of items imported is reported.
* "(No Subject)" is inserted as the subject in outgoing messages sent via AOL.
* Claris Emailer previously filled in a user's name if they are in the address book. Claris Emailer no longer fills in the name if the name is specified with the address that was received.
* You can now paste an address of the form: "First Last" address@host.com into the address field of an outgoing message.
* Better handling of SMTP servers that respond with two-line responses. This problem caused synchronization errors when sending more than one message.
* Better management of low memory situations.
* Implemented the ability to send CompuServe messages with "No encoding" specified.
* Added x-sender: header to outgoing Internet messages when the email account is different than the email address.
* Proper error message is reported when trying to send stuffed aliases or unstuffed folders.
Changes and Fixes in 1.0v3
* Internet account options are now accessed via a button called Options.
* Domain names are now cached for Open Transport connections.
* America Online TCP connections are now Open Transport native.
* Added support for Open Transport on 68K Macintosh.
* Leading spaces in incoming subjects are stripped.
* Creating new folders in the Filing Cabinet no longer gives an error message.
* The Type field on outgoing messages can no longer be blank.
* Toggling arrows in a new mail window no longer marks a message as changed.
* Clicking the recipient or enclosure tab no longer marks a message as changed.
* Meta-characters are now stripped out of Window menu listings of Filing Cabinet windows.
* Incoming CompuServe messages with extended envelopes that have greater than 50 recipients are now managed properly.
* Enhanced error reporting format for unknown errors in the connection logs.
* Now recovers better from addressing errors in Internet connections.
* Errors for invalid local recipients for Internet messages are now reported.
* When sending hundreds of messages at once, no longer reports "too many files open."
* Header "titles" are now in bold in the newly renamed Show Original Headers dialog.
* The filename variable in content-disposition headers of Internet messages are now handled properly.
* Outgoing quoted-printable messages with enclosures are now handled better.
* Now writes a date header for outgoing Internet messages.
Changes and Fixes in 1.0v2
* No longer loses memory after many connections to America Online.
* Dates on some incoming messages could be wrong in 1.0. They are correct in 1.0v2. Claris Emailer uses your location on the earth to establish the local time. Make sure that you have used the Date & Time control panel to set your Macintosh's time zone and daylight savings time.
* Closing a message window with unsaved changes now prompts you to save the changes. The previous version always saved the changes.
* Outgoing messages via the Internet now use quoted printable encoding when the message includes extended ASCII characters. This allows you to send messages containing characters not in the ASCII character set such as curly quotes or European characters.
