Background:
ClarisWorks versions 1.x, 2.x and 3.x:
Footnote numbers use the Superscript style. When a footnote number is created, ClarisWorks applies the Superscript style and assigns it a size that's about 3/4 of the size of the adjacent text. So, if you add a footnote to some 12 point text, the footnote number is generated in 9 point superscript.
ClarisWorks version 4.x:
Footnote numbers use a newly added style called Superior. The Superior style scales the font size down internally. For example, if you footnote some 12 point text, then select the footnote and check the size, it is still defined as 12 point text even though it is visibly smaller.
The benefit of Superior style is that it's scalable. That is, if you resize the text later, the Superior style will automatically scale the footnote number to the correct size. The Superior style is also optimized for printing the correct size characters for footnotes.
However, these Superior-styled footnote numbers may be difficult to read on screen. They can be so small that the screen does not have enough resolution to display them properly.
Workaround:
You can edit the Style used for footnote numbers so that it uses the superscript style, like earlier versions of ClarisWorks. You will lose the benefits of scalability and optimization for printing, but this will make them more readable on screen.
To edit this style, choose Show Styles from the View menu. Select the Footnote Index style, then click the Edit button. Choose 'Superscript' and '9 point' from the menus. Click Done. All your existing footnote numbers will change to match the new style settings.
