Using AppleShare to Share Your User Dictionary Across a Network

When you have many people on a network it can be very valuable to share a common user dictionary.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

This article requires that you have a basic understanding of how to share files via AppleShare.

When you have many people on a network it can be very valuable to share a common user dictionary. That way words that are commonly used, like your company name or a product name, only have to be entered once.

Here's an easy way to set this up:
The first thing you need to do is to decide who will host the dictionary and go to that computer
Create a folder named "Shared" and allow sharing of it's contents
Open your applicatio
From the Edit menu select Spelling then Select Dictionaries*
Make sure that User Dictionary is chosen from the pull down menu
Click on New
You can name your new dictionary "Shared Dictionary" and save it in your new Shared folder
Now move to another computer
Go to your Chooser and mount the volume that has the Shared folder
Open your application
From the Edit menu you can select Spelling then Select Dictionaries
Now you can select the Shared Dictionary from the Shared folder that you mounted via AppleShare

Now you are sharing the dictionary and any changes you make will effect everyone who is also using this dictionary.

* For ClarisDraw select Spelling from the Edit menu then Install Dictionaries. For ClarisWorks select Writing Tools from the Edit menu, then Select Dictionaries
