Thank you for licensing ClarisWorks for Kids. We believe you will enjoy hours of entertainment and educational learning with the product. This document contains:

1. Installation Information
2. Technical Notes and Tips
3. International issues
4. Late-Breaking Issues and More Information

1. Installation
The CD version of this software installs the following files:

A. A complete version of the ClarisWorks for Kids application including a full set of clip art, templates, sounds, and movies. Alternatively, you may select to install a subset of the clip art if you have a limited amount of disk space using the Custom Install option. The floppy disk edition includes the complete application but only a subset of the full content found on the CD.
B. This Read Me document.
C. A PDF version of the ClarisWorks for Kids Getting Started Guide. You will need Adobe Acrobat to open the file.
D. A ClarisWorks for Kids Folder, containing the support files necessary to run ClarisWorks for Kids.

E. Help files, automatically placed in the Claris folder in the System Folder.
F. The ClarisWorks for Kids penmanship fonts which are placed in the Fonts folder in the System Folder.

2. Technical Notes and Tips
A. The software is preset to 3,250K minimum and 5,000K preferred and suggested. However, if you intend to work with large documents or insert many QuickTime movies and sounds, it is strongly recommended that you increase the allotted memory partition for ClarisWorks for Kids. This is done by increasing the "preferred size" in the "Get Info" Dialog box in the Finder for ClarisWorks for Kids.
B. If you experience problems running ClarisWorks for Kids on your computer, try turning off any unnecessary System Extensions and Control Panels and restarting your machine. To take advantage of ClarisWorks for Kids' full multimedia capabilities, Apple Computer's QuickTime¨ and Speech Manager and should be turned on. However, to improve performance consider turning these off.
C. Be sure to change your password and "hint" in the Teacher Menu if you are concerned about security.

D. If you had previously installed a beta version of ClarisWorks for Kids, it is recommended that you delete the existing ClarisWorks for Kids Preference file (found in the Preferences Folder in your System Folder) before you install this final version.
E. If you intend to run a web browser from within ClarisWorks for Kids' Web tools folder, you will need sufficient RAM in your computer to open both programs simultaneously.
F. If ClarisWorks for Kids is not "speaking", be sure that Apple MacinTalk (English Text to Speech) software is loaded on your computer. A copy of this software is available on this CD. You should be aware that most voices use 300Kb of RAM above and beyond what is required to run ClarisWorks for Kids. The "Bruce", "Agnes" and "Victoria" voices require 1,500Kb. Also, be sure that you have your computer volume levels turned up (System Folder: Control Panels: Monitors and Sounds).
G. If Adobe Type Reunion is installed on the same computer as ClarisWorks for Kids, menu and button display and functionality may be problematic. Remove Adobe Type Reunion from your Extensions folder within the System folder and restart your computer.

H. Certain Activities will not print correctly to PostScript printers (transparent paint frames do not print WYSIWYG via PostScript printer drivers). These are Copying, Tracing Animals, Hidden Animals, Drawing with Shapes, Graphs, Baseball, Football, Basketball. Some Clip Art library objects are also affected.
I. To achieve maximum performance, consider turning off one or more of the speech options in the Teacher menu's Audio Feedback dialog.
J. ClarisWorks For Kids documents have been saved with Page Setup settings for PostScript printers (e.g. Apple LaserWriter, HP LaserJet). When printing to other types of printers (Apple StyleWriter, HP DeskJet), set Orientation to landscape in the Teacher menu's Page Setup dialog.
K. With Modern Memory Manager turned off (32-Bit Addressing under System 7.1), ClarisWorks For Kids will not work correctly. Use the Memory Control Panel to turn on Modern Memory Manager (or 32-Bit Addressing) and restart your Macintosh.
L. Some sounds are distorted with Virtual Memory on. Use the Memory Control Panel to turn off Virtual Memory.

M. There is a known incompatibility with the Epson Stylus printer drivers 2.52, 2.70, and 3.04, with Background Printing turned On. If you are using one of these drivers and are seeing an empty Library dialog, turn Background Printing Off in the Chooser and relaunch ClarisWorks for Kids.
N. When attempting to save a file to a hard drive with more than 2.1 Gb of free space, a disk full error will result under operating systems prior to 7.5. Either save the file to a floppy, or consider upgrading your system software.
O. If you have selected a clipart library and the program asks you to insert the disk ClarisWorks for Kids CD, this means a file containing a QuickTime movie cannot be located on your hard disk. Insert the ClarisWorks for Kids CD, and Cancel the "Movie cannot play properly" dialog. Select "Hide Clip Art" from the Options menu, then "Show Clip Art" and select the desired library.

3. International Issues
A. ClarisWorks for Kids installs the US English dictionary. If you prefer to use another dictionary, you must open the Claris Folder in the System folder and remove the file called "US English - Spelling" from the folder. Launch ClarisWorks for Kids and from within a document and select Spelling in the Edit menu. The program will then automatically provide you with a dialog box that allows you to locate the Main dictionary. Navigate to the Claris folder in the System folder and select the dictionary of your choice. Your new selection will now be maintained. We've included a copy of the "UK English - Spelling" dictionary on ClarisWorks for Kids CD in the UK Dictionary Folder if you don't already have this software on your computer. Copy it to your Claris Folder in your System folder on your computer's hard drive.

B. If you would like to remove content that is specific to the US edition (US Presidents etc.), simply open from within the Finder the ClarisWorks for Kids folder after installation and navigate to the Clip Art or Activities folders. Remove the unneeded documents.
