Updated Windows 95 Driver For The HP LaserJet 5 Family Seems to Reduce Printing Errors

There is a PCL driver available from HP that is compatible with Claris software running under Windows 95. It is compatible with the LaserJet 5, 5L, 5M, 5N, 6P & 6MP.

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

The standard PCL (printer control language) driver version G1.30 is available for the HP 5, 5L, 5M, 5N, 6P & 6MP laser jet models. The actual version of the new driver is G1.30 (PCL). If you have been experiencing problems printing to an HP 5 series driver we recommend installing this latest version. You can find version information for your currently installed HP 5-family driver by following these steps:

1) Click the Start button, choose Settings, then Printers
2) Right-click on your HP driver and choose Properties
3) Click on the Device Options tab
4) Click on the About button

Anything prior to version G1.30 may be incompatible with Claris software.

The driver is available on the Hewlett-Packard website, www.hp.com. The specific URL for the the LaserJet 5L page is http://hpcc923.external.hp.com/cposupport/indexes1/lj5ls.html.

Once you download the compressed driver archive to your hard drive, expand it into its own folder. Proceed with a normal installation of a new printer (Start, Settings, Printers, Add Printer), and when you get to the list of manufacturer's, click on Have Disk. Navigate to the folder where you expanded your archive and it will install the new driver.

You can also just change your existing installation of any printer driver by doing the following:

1) Click on Start, Settings, Printers.
2) Right-click on your installed HP driver and choose Properties.
3) Click on the Details tab.
4) Click on the New Driver button and proceed as described in the previous paragraph to the list of manufacturers and the Have Disk button.
