Troubleshooting Windows Printing Issues (Errors Or WYSIWYG)

This article is designed to be the one-stop shopping for your Windows printing troubles -- whether you're getting an error or not getting what you want (WYSIWYG).

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.

Are you getting an ERROR?

-- Exception 10h:

Switch to a driver that ships with Windows 95 - usually the same model printer, but try one lower family number. [Example: HP LaserJet 5si and HP LaserJet 4si]

or

Turn off the Math Coprocessor :
1. With your right mouse button, click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Device Manager tab, click View devices by type.
3. Double-click System Devices.
4. Click Numeric Data processor, and then click Properties.
NOTE: With a Plug and Play bios, the Numeric Data Processor option will be under a Plug and Play branch in the Device Manager rather than at the top level.
5. On the Settings tab, click Never Use The Numeric Data Processor.
6. Click OK.
7. Restart your computer.

-- Divide Error:

Switch to a driver that ships with Windows 95 - usually the same model printer, but try one lower family number. [Example: HP LaserJet 5si and HP LaserJet 4si]

-- "Cannot Access Print Options":

This usually only occurs in FileMaker Pro 3.0v1 and 3.0v2. It was fixed as of v3, so updating their FMP application is the solution.

Are you getting printed out what you see on-screen (WYSIWYG)?

-- Text Clipping:

In FMP versions 3.0v3 and later, go to layout mode and hold the Shift key down while accessing Mode, Layout Setup. A New Break checkbox will appear in the dialog box. Check it and see if that does it.

If the above doesn't work, remain in Layout mode, select the text field that is getting clipped and go to Format, Line Spacing and choose Custom. Switch the Lines to Pixels and lower the default number of 16 to something like 13. Switch to Preview mode and check it out.

-- Solid Black or Shading instead of Pattern Fill:

If you are printing to an HP 4 (most models), you likely need to switch your printer's graphics mode from raster to vector or vice versa. This is done in the printer's properties. Click on Start, choose Settings, then Printers. Right-click on your printer and choose properties from the pop-up menu. Click on the graphics tab, where you'll see the radio buttons for raster and vector graphics. Whatever it is set to, choose the other one.
