If you create an "options" or default stationery file, the settings you establish in that file will be used every time you create a new file of that type (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.). So, if you create, for example, a word processing options stationery file with the margins set to 1.5 inches, every time you choose Word Processing from the New Document dialog box, an untitled document will be created that has 1.5 inch margins (as opposed to the ClarisWorks default standard of 1 inch margins).
Normally, if you use the New Document Buttons in the Button Bar to create a new file (instead of using the menu command), ClarisWorks will, as would be expected, also use the stationery file to create a new blank file with your preferred settings. However, if you have or had ClarisWorks 3.0 (or an earlier version) on your computer, the buttons in the Button Bar may create new files that do not contain your custom modifications.
This is due to the fact that the button is looking for your options stationery document in a folder called "ClarisWorks Stationery." In ClarisWorks 3.0 and earlier, this folder was stored on your hard drive inside the Claris folder, which is within your System folder. In ClarisWorks 5.0 (and 4.0), this folder is located within the ClarisWorks program folder. If you still have a ClarisWorks Stationery folder in the Claris folder within your System folder, the buttons in the ClarisWorks 5.0 Button Bar will look there for the file, instead of looking for the ClarisWorks Stationery folder within the program folder.
To correct the situation, you can move, rename or delete the ClarisWorks Stationery folder in the Claris folder within your System folder. If you are no longer using your previous version of ClarisWorks, it is recommended that you delete the old ClarisWorks Stationery folder. If you want to continue to have access to these files, you should move the folder out of the Claris folder or give it a different name. If you do either of these, when you use ClarisWorks 3.0 you will no longer see the available stationery files when clicking on the option to "Start with an Assistant or Stationery" in the New Document dialog box. However, if you choose Open from the File menu and navigate to the location of your old ClarisWorks Stationery folder, you will be able to open and use all of the stationery files in that folder. In ClarisWorks 5.0, all of the stationery files will continue to be available in the New Document dialog box, and the New Document buttons will utilize your options stationery file as expected.
NOTE: For more information on creating and using default (options) stationery files, open the ClarisWorks Help Index, type the word "stationery" and select the desired topic, particularly "Set up default fonts and formatting."
