GIFs with Transparent Background Print or Export as Black

This information was provided by Claris Corporation on 16 March 1998, and incorporated into Apple Computer's Tech Info Library.
Problems:
1- GIF images brought into ClarisWorks that have transparent background pixels print as solid black.
2- if you export to a PICT file, then open the PICT file in another program, the images will appear solid black.

An example of how this problem can be created:
1- Open a web page in Netscape 4.03 with a gif image with a transparent background, such as www.claris.com

2- Open a blank ClarisWorks 5.0 drawing document

3- Copy/paste the image from Netscape into ClarisWorks. Or, drag-and-drop the image into ClarisWorks. The image will appear correct on screen. If the image has transparent pixels, you'll see the drawing grid behind the image.

4- Print using either the LaserWriter 8 driver or the HP DJ 800 Series driver. The GIF image prints as solid black.

5- Save the document as a PICT file, then open the PICT file in another program, such as MacDraw Pro. The GIF image appears solid black on screen.

As of this writing, earlier versions of ClarisWorks prior to 5.0 have not been tested for these problems. We have no workaround at this time.
