Mac OS 8.5: Disabling Network Services Location Registry

Personal Web Sharing 1.5.1, by default, turns Network Services Location registry on. You may turn off the NSL feature by disabling the Mac OS 8.5 provided DNSPlugIn and SLPPlugIn extensions located in the System folder's Extensions folder. You can disable these extensions using the Extensions Manager control panel.

If you want Network Services Location activated for another application but want to turn it off for Personal Web Sharing, use ResEdit to open both the Web Sharing control panel and Web Sharing extension. Set string number 28 to zero for Str# 300. The Personal Web Sharing server should be stopped through its control panel before attempting to use ResEdit.

After this change has been made, you need to throw away the Web Sharing folder in the active System folder's Preference folder. Restart the server within the Personal Web Sharing control panel and the NSL registry will be off just for this Web Sharing server.

Note: Apple does not provide technical support for ResEdit. When using ResEdit, always work on a copy of a file rather than the original. Caution should be heeded prior to using ResEdit to modify any files.
