Power Mac G4: Overview of Multiprocessing

This article describes the type of multiprocessing operating mode used by the Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet).
Multiprocessing refers to the function of a computer using more than one processor to perform a computing task. The Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) uses symmetric multiprocessing.

Symmetric multiprocessing means the workload of the overall system can be spread equally among the processors available in the computer. Any processor can do any task. The operating system has to be specifically designed to take advantage of multiple processors but the applications do not need to be. However, applications that are written to take advantage of them will experience a performance increase.
