Note: This article pertains to Mac OS X Server versions 1.x, which were released prior to May 2001.
Removed
1. Workstation Access List - In At Ease 5.0, each workstation had to be added to an "authorized" workstations list in order to use the server. If the workstation was not in the list, then it would not be able to run. This has been removed to eliminate the need to add workstations.
2. Web Access
3. Guardian Passwords - Guardians have been removed from Macintosh Manager. This was a concept that was mostly useful with the web access feature of At Ease 5.0.
4. Clues - In previous versions of At Ease, the administrator was provided a text string to be used as a clue to their passwords. With security becoming an increasing concern, this has been removed.
5. Attach Sounds - In all prior versions of At Ease, the administrator could attach sounds to the items that appeared on the brown panel in the Panels environment. These sounds would play when the mouse was passed over the button for an item with an attached sound. The new panels environment of Macintosh Manager does not support this feature.
6. Prevent users from accessing the hard drive by booting from a floppy or other removable media.
Changed
1. Finder Environment - The unrestricted Finder environment used to be a way of "turning off" At Ease. Macintosh Manager still supports this environment, but the user is actually logged into At Ease, which means user preferences and limited security will be permitted in this environment. This includes access to the user's documents folder, themes, volumes available at login, desktop printers, and application preferences. The system access environment is similar to the Finder environment in At Ease 5.0.
2. Special Folders - Special folders are a way of customizing certain folders on workstations to have a specific set of privileges. For example, on Machine A, which might be the "teacher station" in normal use, you might want one folder that exists here to contain items that only a certain workgroup could access (like, maybe, the Teacher workgroup). The special folders feature has been pared down to include one folder per workgroup.
3. Panels - The Panels environment has been updated and rewritten primarily to be more consistent with new visual aspects of the Mac OS.
