Macintosh Management Server

Macintosh Manager software works in conjunction with AppleFileServer (AFP) server software. The AppleFileServer is a server process that Macintosh Manager uses to communicate between the client computer and the Macintosh Manager databases.

Macintosh Management server provides the following services:

Installing the Macintosh Management Server Software

The Macintosh Management server software is preinstalled on the Macintosh Server G3 computers shipping with Mac OS X Server preinstalled.

If you purchased Mac OS X Server software as a standalone package without hardware, you need to install NetBoot server software. NetBoot server software is on a separate CD that comes as part of the software package. You must install NetBoot server software on a computer that already has the Mac OS X Server software installed and set up. The Macintosh Management software is installed as part of the NetBoot server installation.

For complete instructions on installing the NetBoot Server software, see:

60085 "Mac OS X Server : NetBoot Installation and Setup."

The NetBoot Server Setup Assistant guides you through the steps necessary to set up the software. To learn more about each step, click the Tell Me More button in the window. If you need to change any setup information in the future, you can use the NetBoot Server Setup Assistant to make changes. In Setup Assistant, you must select the option...

Server Automatic Setup

All setup and configuration of the Macintosh Management server for clients access is done automatically. A sharepoint on the HFS+ partition is created on the server called "Macintosh Manager". This folder will hold the documents folder and the Macintosh Managers Items folder. An AFP User named "Macintosh Manager User" is created in the NetInfo database and a password generated. The user permissions are set to read and write to the sharepoint.

Tip: If the Macintosh Manager User is mistakenly deleted from the NetInfo database it will be regenerated when the server is restarted.

Tip: The Macintosh Manager User Password is dynamically reset every time the server process is started. Only the Macintosh Manager software knows it.
