This section of the System Requirements needs a little clarification. Open Transport 1.2 is only required for QuickTime Streaming and is not required for normal playback of local movie files. However, the only way to install Open Transport 1.2 (or higher) is to install Mac OS 8 (or higher). Open Transport 1.2 is not supported on any version of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS 8 (the latest version of Open Transport that you can download for systems prior to Mac OS 8 is version 1.1.2).
So, just to clarify, here are the system requirements for QuickTime 4 slightly restated:
- Any Macintosh based on the 68020 processor (or higher)
- System 7.1.1 or higher
- 8MB RAM for 680x0 computer or 16MB RAM for PowerPC-based computers
- Streaming requires a PowerPC running Mac OS 8 (or higher) and a static IP address or a DHCP server
