LaserWriter: Password Reset (12/94)

A "Trojan horse" program has been circulating that sets the password of
PostScript LaserWriters to a value other than the default "0" -- preventing
printing with Apple's driver. It does not duplicate itself like a virus,
and is not widespread, but can be embedded in any PostScript code being
sent to a LaserWriter.

The symptoms of the trojan horse include the printer's name appearing in the Chooser dialog box, but when someone tries to print, the error message "Invalid Access" may appear. If the Print Monitor is in use, the error message "Job cannot be printed, but the document is OK" may appear.

Apple is providing a utility program that resets the password of
PostScript LaserWriters to the default "0". This allows users to again
access the printer. If a customer experiences the above symptoms, use
this utility before deciding to replace the LaserWriter's controller
board.

This utility only works on the LaserWriter, LaserWriter Plus, LaserWriter IINT, LaserWriter IINTX(J) and the Personal LaserWriter NT printers.
