iPod: About Software Update

This document explains how the iPod Software Updater works when you download it from the Software Update pane of System Preferences (Mac OS X), or the Software Update control panel (Mac OS 9).
You can download iPod Software Updater from Apple Software Downloads, the iPod download page, or you download it using the Software the Software Update pane of System Preferences (Mac OS X), or the Software Update control panel (Mac OS 9).

iPod Software Updater will appear in the Mac OS Software Update feature whether you have an iPod or not. If you don't have an iPod and want to make the update inactive so it won't appear, follow the steps in "Mac OS X: How to Make a Software Update Inactive or Active".

If you have an iPod, you can download the iPod Software Updater by following these steps:

  1. Open Software Update.
  2. Click Update Now. The iPod Software Updater appears in the list of available updates.
  3. Click the checkbox in the Install column.
  4. Click Install. The update is downloaded into the iPod Software Updater folder, inside of the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder in Mac OS X, or inside the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder in Mac OS 9. If you have moved or renamed the Utilities folder in Mac OS X, a new Utilities folder will be created inside the Applications folder. The Software Update installation will then proceed in this new folder. If you have moved or renamed the Utilities folder in Mac OS 9, the Software Update installation will not work. In this case, you should download the update from Apple Software Downloads.
  5. Connect iPod to your computer using the included cable.
  6. Open iTunes.
  7. iTunes will check the Utilities folder for the update, compare the versions of iPod software, and offer to install the later update.
  8. Click OK. iTunes installs the update.
