iPod Software 1.2 introduces the Browse menu. It is available from the main menu. See Figure 1.
Figure 1 iPod 1.2 Browse menu
In the Browse menu you choose to view songs by Artists, Albums, Songs, Genres, or Composers.
Artists
This menu choice displays a list of all the different artists in iPod's music library. It works the same as in iPod Software 1.1, but is now located in the Browse menu.
Albums
This menu choice is new to iPod Software 1.2. It is a quick way to see a list of all the albums stored on iPod. As with iPod Software 1.1, you can see this same album list by selecting Artists, then All.
Songs
This menu choice displays a list of all the song titles in the iPod's music library. It works the same as in iPod Software 1.1, but is now located in the Browse menu.
Genres
This is new to iPod Software 1.2. When selected, it lists all the different genres that are stored in iPod. Genre is an ID3 tag that you can set in iTunes.
Composers
This option is new to iPod Software 1.2 and iTunes 3. The composer tag can be used to distinguish several versions of the same song written by the same composer, but performed by different artists.
Examples
1. Two versions of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto no. 3 are stored on iPod. One is performed by Martha Argerich, and the other by Yefim Bronfman. The Composer tag for each song is filled in with Sergei Prokofiev. The Artist tag is filled in by the unique artist playing Piano Concerto no. 3.
2. Another use of the composer tag is to identify the DJ of a DJ-mixed album. These albums consist of songs performed by different artists that are mixed together (compiled) by a DJ. By entering the DJ's name as the composer, the song's artist can be populated in the Artist tag.
