When iPod is used as an external FireWire hard disk, or is set to Manually Update, you must correctly eject it before you unplug the FireWire cable to protect the data on iPod, and on your computer. You should never disconnect iPod from any computer while iPod's screen says "Do not disconnect". Disconnecting in this state could damage data.
There are several ways to properly eject iPod in the Windows operating system:
- Eject button in MUSICMATCH
- Safe Remove Hardware in the system tray
- iPod Watcher in the system tray
Eject button in MUSICMATCH
Follow these steps to eject the iPod from within the Music Match Jukebox application.
1. Select iPod in the MUSICMATCH Jukebox PortablesPlus window:

2. Click Eject at the lower-left of the MUSICMATCH Jukebox PortablesPlus window:

3. An alert box appears. Click Yes.
4. There is about a 15 second wait before iPod is ejected . The MUSICMATCH Jukebox PortablesPlus window displays two status messages: "Ejecting iPod. Please wait..." and "It is now safe to disconnect iPod."
5. When iPod has been ejected, the screen says, "OK to disconnect."
6. Unplug iPod.
Safe Remove Hardware in the system tray
Follow these steps to eject the iPod using the Unplug or Eject Hardware Tool in the Windows System Tray.
Follow these steps to eject iPod using the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray:
1. At the bottom-right of the screen, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon:

2. Click the pop-up menu. In this example for Windows Me it reads, "Stop IEEE 1394 Disk-Drive[F:]"

3. When the Safe To Remove Hardware message appears, click OK.
4. Make sure you see the "OK to disconnect" screen on iPod, then disconnect it from the computer.
iPod Watcher in the system tray
Follow these steps to eject iPod using the iPod Watcher icon in the system tray:
1. Make sure no applications are using iPod, including MUSICMATCH Jukebox.
2. Click the iPod icon in the system tray, and choose Unmount from the pop-up menu.

3. An alert box appears. Click OK.
4. Make sure you see the "OK to disconnect" screen on iPod, then disconnect it from the computer.
Do not use right button on mouse to eject iPod
Warning: You should not use the contextual menu eject option by right-clicking on the iPod hard disk icon in the My Computer window.
