Installing iPod Software 2.0 for Windows

Before you install
The entire installation process can take up to 20 minutes to complete.

Bringing any other windows or applications in front of the Installer windows may confuse the Installer, causing it to always present the Installer windows behind all other applications and windows, or make pop-up menu selections in the Installer window work incorrectly. If this happens, double-click the Back button twice, then click the Next button to refresh the Installer window.

If at any time a dialog appears asking to install a driver for the iPod's hard disk, dismiss it and do not click OK.

How to install

  1. Insert the CD into the computer's disc drive.
  2. After a short wait, the Choose Setup Language window appears, shown here.

If the installer does not open automatically:
    1. Open My Computer.
    2. Open the CD.
    3. Double-click the "setup" install icon, shown here.

  3. The configuration progress bar appears, shown here.

  4. When the iPod for Windows V2.0 window appears, click Install, as shown here.

  5. The iPod Serial Number dialog box appears. Type in iPod's serial number, as shown here. The serial number is engraved on iPod's metal case.

Tip: Enter an 11-character iPod serial number to enable the Next button.

The serial number is also available in iPod's menu system.

  6. Click Next. The Software License Agreement window appears, shown here. Read the text. If you agree, click Yes.

  7. Select your country or region and click Next, as shown here.

  8. If your country is not shown, select Show All to reveal other choices.

  9. Click Next. When Registration Information appears, fill out the appropriate information and click Next.

  10. Fill in the registration window, then click Next.

  11. The "iPod needs to be configured" message appears. This message will appear even if an iPod is not connected to the computer, or if the iPod has already been formatted for Windows.

If iPod has already been configured for use with Windows, click Cancel. You can always run the iPod Software Updater at a later time to convert iPod for use with Windows.

If iPod has not been configured for use with Windows, click the OK button. This will restore iPod from within the Installer. This process can take several minutes. (The iPod Software Updater does not open.) Warning: This erases iPod and changes its format to FAT32. All data on iPod will be lost.

  12. After many installation windows appear and disappear, the Choose Destination Location window appears. Click Next. When the Choose Destination Location window appears, click Next to accept the default location (C:\\Program Files\\iPod).

Important: iPod for Windows software must be installed on the C drive. If it is not, when you restart the computer an alert with this message will appear, "The iPod Watcher did not load due to an error."

  13. There is about a two-minute delay while iPod for Windows installs, many windows will appear and disappear during this process:

  14. The iPod for Windows User Guide 2.0 installer automatically opens and installs with no user interaction.
  15. The MUSICMATCH Jukebox installer automatically opens.
