How to Avoid Issues
- Install the latest updates and service packs from Microsoft.
- Watch iPod's screen. The disk activity indicator (looks like two arrow spinning in a circle) appears in the upper left corner of the screen. Before doing anything on the iPod (viewing the contents in Explorer, disconnecting, and so forth) wait for the arrows to stop spinning.
- In the installer, make sure you follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The exception is if Windows interrupts the installer and asks you to restart your computer before the iPod installer has finished.
- Setting up iPod for the first time can take some time. Be patient. Windows ME performance is not as good as with Windows XP, and can take up to 4 minutes to display the safe to disconnect message during the Configuration step.
- Before you restart your computer, remove iPod from its cradle, or eject it from the file system. See technical document 61724, "iPod for Windows: How to Eject and Disconnect iPod From Your Computer".
Basic Troubleshooting
When you run into an issue that you did not expect with the iPod connected to your Windows PC, you can generally resolve it by doing the following:
1. Check to make sure the cables are securely connected to the iPod and to your PC.
2. Wait until disk activity stops on your iPod. Click the disk eject button in the system tray. It has a disk icon with a green arrow pointing to the left on top of it. Select "Stop IEEE 1394 Device". Wait for the "Safe To Remove Hardware Device" message to appear and click OK. Unplug iPod then reconnect it.
3. Repeat the last step you performed on your PC before you encountered the behavior you did not expect.
4. Quit MUSICMATCH Jukebox and reopen it.
5. Restart your PC.
If you still experience issues, and the basic troubleshooting in the iPod Users Guide does not help, try restoring iPod's software.
