What is virtual memory?

Virtual memory (VM) extends the user's available, physical random access
memory by treating the hard disk - transparently to the user, with the
exception of a slight loss of speed - as if it were additional RAM. With
virtual memory you can run more applications at once and work with larger
amounts of data than you can without virtual memory.
