OPENSTEP Driver Compatibility Guide

This document describes in general terms the types of PC-compatible hardware supported by OPENSTEP for Mach Release 4.x for Intel Processors. This document also provides lists of specific drivers available for OPENSTEP. For more detail on a driver, click on the driver name.

NOTE: Apple Enterprise Software has suspended on-going development of new drivers for the NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP product lines. Where possible, we will be updating current drivers for minor product revisions. These drivers will be made available in the TIL.

If you have specific requirements for drivers for hardware not currently supported, contact your AES sales representative for a quote for custom development work.

GENERAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

CPU
486 or Pentium family-based PC compatible computer. OPENSTEP for Mach requires a floating-point coprocessor. For information on OPENSTEP support for non-Intel CPUs, see TIL article 72566.

EXPANSION BUS

ISA, EISA, VL-Bus or PCI expansion bus.

AVAILABLE HARD DISK SPACE

OPENSTEP for Mach supports multiple partitioned hard disks, allowing the user to install and boot several operating systems from the same local hard disk. Larger local disks are recommended for stand-alone systems or for systems with a local non-OPENSTEP for Mach partition.

RAM REQUIREMENTS

RAM requirements vary depending upon your selection of graphics adapter and imaging model.

GRAPHICS ADAPTERS

See the "Display Options" section in this guide for details on graphics support.

DISK INTERFACES

IDE and several SCSI hard disk interfaces are supported. See later sections of this guide for details.

POINTING DEVICES

See the "System Options" and "Other Options" sectiosn in this guide for details on pointing device support.

PRINTERS

Any PostScript printer connected via a serial port, parallel port or network including the NeXT Color Printer (connected via a SCSI port). Apple Computer recommends color PostScript printers with PostScript Level II for proper color support.
