Important Information About Your Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card

Congratulations on purchasing a Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card. The information in this document adds to and updates the information in your Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card User's Guide and the manuals that came with your computer. Read the tips below as well as your manuals to take full advantage of the increased speed and new capabilities your computer will have after you install the Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card.

Using the Processor Upgrade Card

Once you turn on the Processor Upgrade Card, the 601 Processor Upgrade Enabler file must remain on your hard disk (it is installed on your hard disk with the upgrade card software). This file is also on the Install Me First and the Disk Tools disks that came with the upgrade card, and you can start the computer with either of those disks. If your computer will not start up, follow the instructions on reinstalling system software in the Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card User's Guide.

To turn the Processor Upgrade Card on and off, choose Control Panels from the Apple menu and double-click the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel icon to open it. Click Off to turn the card off and use the 040 processor that originally came with your Macintosh. Click On to turn the card on and use the 601 (PowerPC) processor. You must restart your computer for the change to take effect.

Memory requirements for animation

When the Processor Upgrade card is turned on, you may experience problems when watching computer animation. Increasing the amount of memory assigned to the program may help. To increase the program's memory, click the program's icon (in the Finder) to select it, and choose Get Info from the File menu. Type a bigger number in the Preferred size box.

You can also try running the animation with the card turned off, or installing more memory (RAM).

Using CloseView and the Apple Video Player

If you have a Macintosh LC630 or Quadra 630 with a Video In or TV Tuner card installed: CloseView does not work with the Apple Video Player program. To view video or TV with Apple Video Player, turn off CloseView with the CloseView control panel or by typing Command-Option-O.

Using CPU Energy Saver

If you have a Macintosh LC575: CPU Energy Saver is not compatible with the Macintosh LC575. CPU Energy Saver is located in the Apple Extras folder. Do not install this file into your System Folder because it may cause your computer to function improperly.

Using Custom Install to install the upgrade card software

Apple recommends that you use Easy Install to install the upgrade card software. If you choose Custom Install instead, some items may be installed that are incompatible with the upgrade card. Two such items are described below.

Assistant Toolbox Extension: If you have problems printing to the LaserWriter Select 310 with the Macintosh Processor Upgrade Card turned on, check for a file called Assistant Toolbox Extension in your Extensions folder (in the System Folder).Throw away this file and restart your Macintosh, then try printing again.

AutoRemounter: If you notice slower performance over a network, check in the Control Panels folder for a file named AutoRemounter. Throw away this file and restart your Macintosh.
