WebObjects 5 Deployment: Apple Netname Server Startup Error on Windows 2000

After an installation of WebObjects 5.0 Deployment on Windows 2000, the System Event Log shows the following message from the Apple Netname Server: "The Apple Netname Server depends on the following nonexistent service: Apple_Mach_Daemon." Neither of these services are used by the Deployment components and should not have been installed.

Solution

This issue is expected to be corrected in a future version of the product. In the meantime follow these steps to disable the Apple Netname Service:

1. Choose the Start Menu->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services

2. Select the Apple Netname Server and then the menu option Action->Properties
Note: An alert box with this message may appear: "Configuration Manager: The specified device instance handle does not correspond to a present device." Click OK to continue.

3. Change the Startup type from Automatic to Disabled.

4. Click Apply

5. Click OK.
