Macintosh Display Card 48: Color Problems

I have a Macintosh with a two page monochrome monitor and a Macintosh
Display Card 4*8 video card.

When the control panel has the card set to black-and-white, the monitor
drops pixels at random. When the card is set for four shades or 16 shades it
works fine.

Is this normal, or should I replace the card?

That is most definitely NOT the normal function of that video card -- we
would recommend replacing it, as the video memory is probably damaged. In
fact, you may be able to see slight discolorations (when the monitor is in
color mode) in the upper-left corner of the screen because of RAM failure.
Even if you don't see the discolorations, we would advise replacing the
video card anyway.
